It is one of the most exciting times to be at Nokia World–it feels like super change is in the air. Many of you who may have thought that Nokia was a big beast and could never change, well, in the last 48 hours have seen major changes: New CEO Canadian, Vanjoki resigning, N8 launching, QT arriving. Certainly radical.
I have to admit, it is very strange that the new CEO would not attend the Nokia World, at least to address the minions and give us great confidence–maybe he hasnt had enough media training or didnt have a speech prepared. We dont know but it would have been nice to have him here: confidence building and anylist reassuring. I look forward to meet him one day. From his live broadcast intro he seems very dynamic!
At the keynotes, Niklas Savander, most definitly threw some numbers out there that I have all been wanting to hear and cleared up much misleading information or perception out there on the web and in backroom talks: Nokia is the leader in the Smartphone market:
260 thousand nokia smartphones are Nokia with more smartphone sales than any other mobile phone company in the world.
They have heard the criticism of symbian, and now a new symbian is available, faster, easier to use, developer friendly.
50million new symbian smartphones will ship this year–so you’d better get coding because they are focusing on new application development with Purnima Kochinkar telling us that Forum Nokia is taking the pain out of the signing process by doing the signing for you for java mobile edition and coming soon free symbian signing (I’m waiting on pins and needles for that so I can get my flash lite Anina Dress Up game into Ovi store).
With 364 Million s40 phones out there and 1 million phones shipping per day, you’d best take advantage of that free is "in" and emerging markets are where the customers are willing to pay for the right experience in their language and in their currency. She offered some insight into how to generate revenues, a much criticized point on Ovi store with TRY AND BUY, IN APP PURCHASE. There were some pretty pissed off birds from ANGRY BIRD which has sold 7 million copies that showed how they in-game sell the EAGLE to bypass a level their users cant attain to keep the game moving forward.
Reach, reach, reach, location, localization, and 190 countries, 120 million Nokia phones and smartphones, credit card and operator billing…the quote however was "lets reduce fragmentation." The solution is the QT platform and for web developers widgets and a new handset browser. Nokia is offering the s40 touch SDK for mass markets and feature phones available now on Forum Nokia.
More figures: 175 million symbian devices and 45 million touch enabled smartphones.
The new N8: 100 operators in dozen countries have signed up to offer the N8.
Mapping: to clear up some figures and facts again: Nokia is the biggest
in mobile mapping with their aquisition of Navteq there are some nice
features: Nokia has invested in maps, laying the foundation for the new navigation services: Ovi maps and increased navigation.
Nokia is the leader in mobile navigation "with superior functionality, quality and reach" says Savander with pride and a touch of arrogance at the idea that Google could in any way be a close second.
One of the new things I learned and will use in the next days during the fashion week will definitly be the Ovi maps, featuring pedestrian navigation that finds you the fastest routs by foot, as well as the best line to take on the underground. I’m going to test that out without being connected to the network to navigate by downloading the maps to my N8 and lets see if it can find me the best routes to the London fashion week venues without a constant mobile connection on my prepaid phone. Savander said that Ovi maps are less data hungry because it’s optimized for mobile phone use "unlike google maps" he says to put down the misbeliefs out there. The scope is that Ovi maps are available in 78 countries with 66% of phones sold for navigation were nokia phones.
Next generation services will all be about next generation mapping, where you are taking into account where you are and what’s around you with easy to access information and services uniqely tailored to you. Personalized mapping experience. You make the choice of what information you want to share and recieve.
"2013 more than 800 million people will be using gps related devices and services. Soon everything on the internet will have a location coordinate and it will transcend the user experience." said Savander, "Nokia intend to own this space of location based services."
Working hard and making progress on migo. No migo product launches today but by the end of the year have some news to launch–stay tuned was the message.
"Nokia is back." says Savander. My question is, if all the numbers are true, then why the statement that Nokia is back? They never left the number one spot according to the figures quoted today.
New Devices by Vanjoki–and a very curt short goodbye.
C6 maps
Something that I most certainly could use in Bright sunny Sydney and Beijing: cbd–Nokia clear black display–premium touch screen with higher contrast screen. Blacker than black, removing the reflections on the glass and improving ourdoor visibility, making a more dynamic image, with lower power consumption.
C7
3.5 inch display
Distinctive stainless steel body, beaufiul design looking a little trendy and rounded slimmer than an iphone with "amazing services". "Hold it in your hand," says Vanjoki, "The weight – sleekest smoothest device in world
photosharing – tag with location and upload to facebook twitter" Now that’s a feature that will really improve 360Fashion twittering during the fashion weeks. I would like to try that out with the upload in one touch.
Nokia are thinking wider than facebook with other popular networks like ren ren in china and orkut in brazil. Share social networks to other people and other phones like s40 devices. How, I really want to check that out.
Ovi services are free. Ovi maps with pedestrian features, subways, trams trains in 85 cities in other cities with local parking info, services, speedlimit warnings, cleaner easier to use design in c7 and c6.
Competiton: looking for the most active facebooker. 5 Nokia facebook page fans to take part by creating a facebook party. He/She who can best capture their event, promote it, and get a buzz on with their viral marketing approach with the most viral presence of the party by usingn the phone they will win the Nokia c6 and c7 for 20 of their closest friends. Nokia are tapping into the generation Y bee hive working as a team tendencies approach. I think who ever wins will also be straight away offered a job at some of the top advertising companies in America–being able to market effectively on facebook is the hottest going job to date. Something to put on your resume.
Vanjoki was heated when he spoke about the new devices launching: C6, C7, E7.
I have to say with the reference to the E7. Vanjoki said that it was a most requested device the 9000 communicator…Val Kilmer used it in a movie as he sped down the street. I’ve seen it in some other films too (spy films). Well, I think from a fashion point of view the E7 falls short. I think Nokia misinterpreted why people loved the 9000 communicator. I think they loved it because of its STYLE…the green millitary, the antenna, the Russian spy style and the chunky retro JASON BOURNE design of the device. I think that why people loved that 9000 was for the look of it. Nokia could have used it as a style device for all those secret private spy guys that love to wear their millitary pants, combat boots, smoke a cigarette, live in Berlin, Prague, or emerging eastern countries or Russia itself. The phone looked cool in the movie because it was dark green and fit with the tanks rolling around in the scenery.
I always believe that what Nokia fail to understand is that Fashion is really important. Recently at Nokia France office I fell in love with the old bannanna phones. I think I will start to ask for my christmas present from Nokia to have one of these old phones, gut it, and put in a smartphone screen or a modern wifi s40 device. Those phones came in leopard print, and if you know anything about fashion you’d know that if you have a huge bananna phone in your purse, not only when you pull it out will everyone around you stop and stare and talk to you, you will actually FIND IT in that bottomless pit of your female handbag. Nokia, come out with a retro line…go back to your basics…with a modern software and you will take the lead in my opinion in less time.
Hey, I cant wait to download the maps and use them offline. Thanks for making them free!
