New Asha developer competition: you could win big!

Do you develop apps and content for Nokia Asha Series 40 phones? Interested in winning cash prizes and Nokia promotions? Then the Nokia Asha Developer Competition is for you.

For apps submitted to Nokia Store between now and June 30th, 2013, we’re giving awards for the best apps in four Asha categories: music and entertainment; games; utilities and productivity; and news and information. For each of these categories, we’ll be awarding three cash prizes: 25,000 euros for first place, 15,000 euros for second place, and 10,000 euros for third place. In addition, we have three special prizes of 10,000 euros each for the best user experience, best web app, and best new idea.

To top it all off, we’ll promote winning apps in Nokia channel campaigns and present them in targeted communications to other developers to give the winners even more exposure.

To qualify, your app must be designed to run on Nokia Asha Touch phones, and will ideally use at least one of Nokia’s monetisation methods: in-app purchasing or the Nokia Ad Exchange (NAX). The competition is open to developers from around the world—just make sure you publish in Nokia Store by June 30th, 2013.

Ready to accept the challenge? Then get your app ready and enter the Nokia Asha Developer Competition!

DVLUP UK and open beta

We have two big pieces of news regarding DVLUP today: First, we’re very excited to announce that DVLUP, the developer rewards initiative that everyone’s talking about, will be opening for beta in the UK. The site will open on February 25th, and members will be able to begin claiming rewards after April 1st.

In addition, the DVLUP beta for the US and Canada will no longer require an invitation. If you’ve been waiting to join, now’s your chance!

Earn badges and points for your development efforts and community support, show off your chops to the Windows Phone Developer community, and be rewarded for your efforts with badges, gift cards, t-shirts, accessories and more. We’ll be adding new local challenges, as well as challenges for all members regardless of location.

To join, just register on the DVLUP site with your Microsoft Account, and when asked for your country, select “UK” or “US/Canada” depending on your location. You’ll also need to have a Windows Phone Dev Center account to validate your membership.

Riaz Ahmed, one of our Developer Evangelists in the UK, told us that his team is really excited that DVLUP is launching in the UK after seeing a massive success through its private beta launch in the US and Canada. “DVLUP is a fantastic reward initiative that we hope will encourage the development of some great Windows Phone apps through the various challenges. The Nokia UK Developer Experience team will be setting up UK specific challenges for UK developers and we look forward to seeing the results, rewarding developer efforts and even showcasing some of the apps that have come out of DVLUP.”

We couldn’t have said it better, Riaz! We’re happy to be able to open our beta further and bring it our compatriots in the UK. Happy developing!

3D printing industry rallies around Lumia 3DK

3D printed Lumia 820 shellWell, it seems like just a few days ago that we released the Lumia 3DK, letting makers on the cutting edge experiment with our 3D models for the Nokia Lumia 820 back shell, and we couldn’t be more pleased with the result. The reaction has been fantastic, and we’re already seeing some interesting designs showing up on Thingiverse and IdeasProject.

To help those printing at home, the nice folks at Makerbot optimized the model for their Replicator 2 and posted it on Thingiverse, along with some great pictures of the printing process.

We’ve also gotten great responses from 3D printing services i.materialize, Sculpteo, and Shapeways. The latest blog from i.materialise shows us a nice range of designs to get the creative juices flowing, and shows off materials you might not have imagined for a phone case. Velvet, anybody?

Finally, the IdeasProject team has started the 3D Printing Challenge. Share your ideas for Nokia Lumia cases for a chance to win a trip to Mobile World Congress in Barcelona!

It’s been a lot of fun watching all the makers at work. Be sure to check out our wiki, contribute to it where you can, and keep those ideas coming!

New contest: Windows Phone Next App Star. Enter to win devices and appear in a primetime TV commercial

Windows Phone App Star is a Microsoft sponsored tournament-style challenge that will award 100s of prizes and give one developer the chance to see their app featured in a primetime TV commercial.

It’s Microsoft’s way of showcasing great Windows Phone apps from developers around the world. How it works:

  2. Determining the top 64

  3. The Next App Star Grand Champion
Top 64 apps compete in a head-to-head tournament. Public voting determines who moves forward each round.
