At the end of 2008, Nokia sponsored a contest for the best ideas for home screen widgets for the Nokia N97. From a pool of 1,400 ideas submitted by consumers from around the world, the top 50 concepts were selected by Forum Nokia, and other groups inside Nokia. Those ideas were narrowed down to the top 10, and include the most popular idea selected by consumers voting on the Nseries site. The nine other ideas out of the top 10 were hand-picked by representatives from Forum Nokia and specialists inside Nokia.
The top 10 consumer ideas are being turned over to an elite group of developers - details will be posted here soon - who will compete face-to-face during a 24-hour Hackathon at the Nokia Developer Summit in Monaco to build the best Web Runtime (WRT)T widget for use on the home screen of the new Nokia N97 mobile computer.
Developers competing in the Hackathon will race against the clock in full view of Summit delegates to complete their apps on time. At the end of the Hackathon on 29 April, the completed widgets will go before a panel of Nokia experts for judging in front of a live audience.
The winning widgets will receive cash and prizes totaling more than 50,000 euros, along with premium placement in Nokia’s Ovi Store, which opens in May. For the first five widgets chosen as device pre-loads, all user testing, QA, and localisation will be paid for by Nokia.
More than 20 developers representing a dozen companies are confirmed to participate in the Hackathon.
Profiles about the developers competing in the Hackathon will be added to this blog stream, soon.
Good luck to all of the developers competing next week.
