Nokia N97 SDK v1.0 released

ltomuta | 16 July, 2009 17:00

Those engaged in developing applications for Nokia N97 will be interested to know that the final version of the Nokia N97 SDK has been released today.

N97 SDK emulator screnshot

The new SDK version provides:

  • Improved support of home screen features.
  • Updated SDK documentation.
  • Support for the Chinese version of the full keyboard.
  • Updated example applications.
  • Updated default emulator theme.
  • Fixes for all other important bugs.

Read more about features and known issues in SDK's release notes.

It is probably worth making clear a few points about this SDK:

  • Nokia N97 is and S60 5th Edition (Symbian^1) device and it is fully compatible that that platform release. Any application developed for S60 5th Edition devices using the S60 5th Edition (Symbian^1) SDK will be compatible with smartphone as well.
  • The Nokia N97 SDK is only provided as an alternative, mostly beneficial to those developing applications targeting N97's specific features, features not supported by the platform release and thus not supported by other devices based on it, as for example the home screen widgets.
  • While the APIs in the S60 5th Edition SDK are covered by platform's binary compatibility promise, all the additional device specific APIs provided by the Nokia N97 SDKs are provided "as is", without binary compatibility promise.

That's it. Enjoy the new release and don't forget to let us know what you think about it.

hello hannz

the sdks are there in the forum nokia website and you can download them for free.

e.g. you can go to this page http://www.forum.nokia.com/Tools_Docs_and_Code/ and download all the sdks and tools required for development the only thing required is you should be a registered forum nokia user.

Cheers,
Gargi

What about the "Expires in 14 days" notice in about menu

devdailies | 15/08/2009, 14:07

Is not valid for just 14 days and then we need to register. Or is it free? Then what about the 14 day limit? I dont want to work on something for 14 days only to find tht the time was wasted.

Although it is free (as in free beer) the SDK has a mandatory registration requirement. This allows Forum Nokia to track the number of active developers which are doing more than a quick evaluation of the SDK.

After two weeks the emulator will prompt you for a registration key which can be obtained automatically from our servers using a process identical to what can be seen at http://blogs.forum.nokia.com/blog/lucian-tomutas-forum-nokia-blog/2009/02/20/carbide.ui-theme-edition-registration (the "Register now" menu option can be found in emulator window's Help menu).

n97 SDK on Windows 7 64bit

Tigermusti | 21/08/2009, 17:34

Hi there, I had to leave Vista 64bit behind me, it chocked on the Netbeans installation, and it rendered about 10 bluescreens in one week ):

Now I'm on windows 7 wish is, nice but the Emulator provided in the N97 crashes on startup.
Could setten all *.exe files under C:\S60\devices\Nokia_N97_SDK_v1.0 to XP + Service pack 2 compatibility mode solve the problem...and a lot more i gues :) I tried to do this on the Emulator alone and it didn't work.

Any other solutions are welcome...since the one I suggest is lot of work. ( i have to open properties for ever *.exe file. )

Have you seen my blog posts about using Windows Vista and Windows 7 for S60 development? If those are not helpful please start a thread on the Discussion Board, it is easier to communicate on those forums.

It does work, just read my previous blogs about installing on Windows Vista and Windows 7. If the emulator does not start there could be however some issues with for example the audio drivers. A search on the relevant forum on Forum Nokia's Discussion Board will likely help you find a solution.
