At the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Nokia released
version 4.6.2 of Qt, the cross-platform application and UI framework. This release adds a Smart Installer for Symbian (Beta) and Qt port to Maemo 5, in addition to bug fixes and optimisations. Also released was an update to the Qt Visual Studio Add-in, an updated build of the Qt SDK, and seven APIs in Beta form that provide access to mobile device functionality and make mobile development with Qt easier.
The new Smart Installer will let developers target hundreds of millions of existing Symbian devices, including the Nokia N97, Nokia 5800 XpressMusic, Nokia E72 and many more. For end users with legacy Symbian devices, it will let them seamlessly install and run Qt applications. The final version is expected during the first half of this year.
The new port of Qt to Maemo 5 lets Qt developers target the Nokia N900 and be future-proofed for upcoming Maemo platform releases. It will also help developers target Symbian, Windows Mobile and other embedded and desktop platforms, all with the same code base.
