Nokia Redefines Mobile Market, Adjusts Market Estimates

Mobile device shipments will rise 10 per cent this year, compared with last year, according to new forecasts from Nokia, while the company’s market share will remain flat at 34 per cent. These forecasts come as a result of Nokia’s revised definitions of the mobile device market.

Nokia has raised its estimate of total 2009 device shipments by 120 million units. Nokia now says 1.26 billion mobile devices were shipped last year. Using its older definition, Nokia had earlier estimated total 2009 shipments at 1.14 billion units. The revised definitions have also led Nokia to lower its own estimated market share. Nokia now says its volume share of the 2009 mobile device market was 34 per cent. Earlier, Nokia had estimated its share at 38 per cent.

The revised definitions are due to improved measurement processes and tools, Nokia says. These give the company better visibility into the number of mobile devices sold by certain new entrants in the global mobile device market.
