New Nokia N8 Combines Symbian^3, Social Networking, Multimedia, More

The new Nokia N8, Nokia's first device powered by the Symbian^3 developer platform, combines internet, social networking, video, photos, music, and maps. The Nokia N8 features a 3.5-inch capacitive multi-touch screen, making it an ideal showcase for the improved UI features in the Symbian^3. Also included is a new graphics architecture that enables richer UIs, with features such as transparency and the ability to integrate video into almost any screen layout. The UI also features a single-click approach to interaction, and a new task switcher to better support Symbian OS’s full multitasking capabilities. Additionally, for software developers, the device includes Qt 4.6 (a Nokia first), Java MIDP 2.1, and Flash Lite 4.0. The Nokia N8 will ship in the third quarter, and it will retail for 370 euros. Multimedia features on the new Nokia N8 include a 12-megapixel camera with Carl Zeiss optics, Xenon flash, and a large sensor that rivals those found in compact digital cameras. The Nokia N8 can also create HD-quality videos, which can then be edited with the device’s built-in suite of editing tools. The Nokia N8 also enables access to web TV services, as well as social networking sites such as Twitter and Facebook. Also included on the new device are free Ovi Maps walk and drive navigation, with guides for more than 70 countries worldwide.
Designers and graphics artists can create themes for the new Nokia N8 using the new Symbian^3 plug-in for Carbide.ui Theme Edition 2.0, which is now available in a beta version. And developers can prepare applications for the Nokia N8 using the Nokia Qt SDK, now available in a beta version.
