Nokia today announced two new Symbian devices, the Nokia E6 and the Nokia X7. With the new smartphones, Nokia also introduced its latest software update, known as Symbian Anna.
Inspired by Nokia’s new design philosophy, Symbian Anna delivers a new and unique user experience which makes the family of Symbian-based devices more exciting for consumers and the business opportunity with Nokia even better for developers, as these devices also power apps developed with Qt.
New software update – Symbian Anna
While the transition to Windows Phone continues, Nokia will carry on shipping smartphones based on Symbian. Nokia plans to ship 150 million Symbian devices in addition to its existing installed base of 200 million Symbian devices including 100 million Qt-enabled devices, 75 million of which are touchscreen devices.
Symbian Anna includes new, fresh icons and usability enhancements (including split-screen view while typing); faster and easier to use browser; virtual portrait QWERTY for fast typing; and refreshed Ovi Maps with simpler and quicker search as well as new public transportation routes. Both the Nokia X7 and Nokia E6 come equipped with Symbian Anna. Nokia will soon make the Symbian Anna software update available to existing users of the Nokia N8, Nokia C7, Nokia C6 and Nokia E7 via OTA downloads. Running on devices powered by the Qt framework, developers can create applications for these smartphones using Qt SDK 1.1 – currently available as a Release Candidate here on the Forum Nokia website.
Symbian Anna is the first update of its kind and, in order to ensure a continuous stream of new experiences and features, Nokia is planning future software updates to its smartphone portfolio.
Two new Symbian devices announced
The new Nokia E6 is a compact QWERTY and touch-enabled smartphone, ideal for getting things done in all fronts of life: work, home, friends, travel and more.
The Nokia E6 includes an extremely sharp VGA display, and has a capacitive interface and supports pinch-to-zoom. The device has an ARM1176 680MHz processor with Broadcom graphics accelerator (BCM2727), and includes an Ambient Light Sensor, Magnetometer (Compass), Orientation sensor and a Proximity sensor. The Nokia E6 has 8GB of built-in mass memory and support for 32GB on a microSd card; the available device user memory (C:\) is approximately 350MB. The Nokia E6 has 256MB RAM and 1024MB ROM, improved with dynamic data management.
The Nokia E6 seamlessly integrates applications and services, such as receiving, editing and sending documents on the go, sharing images via social media channels, navigating with Ovi Maps and finding near-by services, and more. The Nokia E6 also includes the best Microsoft messaging experience on a business smartphone, including Mail for Exchange, Communicator Mobile and SharePoint access. Additionally, the Nokia E6 features an 8 Megapixel camera, and gives a month’s worth of stand-by time and enough video playback time to watch three videos.
The Nokia E6 is expected to begin shipping in the second quarter of 2011 for an estimated retail price (before taxes and subsidies) of EUR 345.
The Nokia X7 features a premium design made of seamless stainless steel and Gorilla glass, which delivers a solid feel in the hand as well as outstanding durability. This device features a large 4” display that is great for watching videos and playing games. Users will be able to capture pictures and HD-quality video with the 8 megapixel camera with dual led flash. The Nokia X7 has a capacitive interface and supports pinch-to-zoom, while navigating through lists is done with a simple swipe of a finger.
The Nokia X7 includes a 680MHz processor, with additional graphics accelerator (Integrated Video Engine). It has a 3D Entry Accelerometer, Ambient Light Sensor and Proximity sensor, and comes with an 8GB memory card (pre-installed in the phone) and has up to 350MB of in-built memory and support for a micro-SD card support of up to 32GB.
Like the Nokia E6, the Nokia X7 is expected to begin shipping in the second quarter of 2011, where it will become available gradually in Europe, Eurasia, China, India and SEAP. The estimated retail price of the Nokia X7 (before taxes and subsidies) will be EUR 380.

Check again the QtWebkit component included in the Qt SDK, it is version 4.8 and it does support geolocation. I know it because it used to crash apps if not having the Location capability, but now the bug is fixed :)

@Zeddeh - we asked about your question, and wanted to share the following:
Symbian Anna allows developers to leverage QtWebKit 2.1, which includes a growing yet not fully complete set of HTML5 features. One of the missing pieces is HTML5 video, for which we’re working hard to optimize the user experience for upcoming releases. HTML5 GeoLocation API is indeed supported, but using it in your hybrid apps still requires configuration to your Qt C++ wrapper. Look for our engineers to post a sample regarding how to do this in the near future!
For more information, take a look at the Qt WebKit wiki: http://trac.webkit.org/wiki/QtWebKitRelease21
And the supported HTML5 features in Qt WebKit 2.1: http://trac.webkit.org/wiki/QtWebKitFeatures21
And please note: Symbian Anna is the first in a series of upcoming updates.
Thanks! - jason

Qt 4.7.3, Web Runtime 7.2
HTML 4.1
May be there is another update in line with Qt 4.8 & HTML 5

Hey Guys
hope you guys could us out
we are developing an audio with the qt technology and testing on the E7 device.one of the features allows a user to record his/her voice but simultaneously we require a music playback to be there while he records. this does not seem possible while testing. to explain more
1.The device supports audio input & output in asynchronous only. so when audio input, the output is malfunction, while audio output, the audio input is malfunction.
2. i am not sure is it due to the limitation of the device or there is any way to tune the device to control the input & output function synchronously because it's working perfectly in the Simulator but not in the nokia symbian device.
would anyone know the reason behind this?
many thanks
Joshua

Dear Developers and designers,
I'm looking forward to the upcoming X7 but I just could take a look at the specs "under the hood" and while I'm mostly thrilled, someone must have forgotten to include a magnet compass thingy.
Hope you can still correct these issues before it hit the markets..
I remember the desaster of my XpressMusic 5800. I was so happy when I got it and got so evil disappointed because not even three months after the 5800 hit the markets, someone must have gotten a little time to take another closer look at the hardware and they made a new one, basically the same but the 5800 Navigator Edition got the magnet compass thing, which tell you in which direction you have to start walking before to start moving.
If I can no longer wait to get one Nokia descides to introduce the X8 with the dualcore design and 512 MB ram instead of 384.. And I could just loose it again because at the time I am stuck with another one for the next two years.
What a bad world...

next update will call, Symbian Beatrice, or Joana D´arc, Symbian Elizabeth, Symbian Elop or Symbiont Black Spider Man Disney OS
this update should be PR2 Symbian OS and the next four codename ODIN PR3 Symbian OS 5 Thor, the Norse gods and praise not take odd numbers.
SOS4 and SOS5.
Iphone OS 4 - iOS4 - Android OS 2
At least you'll end up with idiotic names of S60 gigabytes hex codebar taskbar feature pack number 5
Well I'm not an OS VOLVO CARS. with the car S60 kkkk
Lack an annoying thing in Nokia's designers,
the Blessed Signal Bar and Battery that are archaic, noticed the icon size, is an ultra small bluetooth.
is a white speck on the huge screen, there are people with vision problems!
For that Bluetooth can not be the best icons of the old sony-ericsson represented by color and not by a damn white, noticed that the Nokia E72 is the battery level of ultra compressed, making viewing difficult, those damn lines or scratches.

As I saw on Symbian Anna on X7 there is a qwerty keyboard for vertical view too and even better also keeping application view visible.
I have an N8... Can or when will I be able to update to Anna? :)

when anna will arrive on n8.............plz nokia be quick
HTML 5 support
Zeddeh | 12/04/2011, 12:00
Will Symbian Anna support HTML5 100%? This is in my opinion crucial, currently Qt Webkit (in Qt SDK 1.1) does not support HTML5 geolocation, will this be solved before Anna is pushed out to the devices? Ps. Looking better then ever =)
