Bringing Windows Phone 'Mango' to Nokia developers

jasonblack | 24 May, 2011 17:15

Today, Microsoft previewed the next major release of Windows Phone. Code named ‘Mango’, this newest release brings a number of substantial improvements in both the software platform and developer tools.

Jo Harlow, executive vice president for Smart Devices, explains today in Nokia Conversations that Nokia is planning to release its first Windows Phone devices based on Mango.

“We are very excited about our strategic partnership with Microsoft, and Mango is a great milestone for the first Nokia with Windows Phone devices,” said Harlow. “We believe Mango offers developers opportunities to create new mobile experiences leveraging both companies’ complementary assets while providing consumers with a new choice in mobile.”

Featuring over 1,500 new APIs, 16 new languages and hardware-accelerated IE9 and HTML5 support, Mango brings enticing new opportunities to developers. Updates for tools, such as enhanced debugging, emulator support with accelerometer, gesture support and profiling will also improve developer productivity.

Rather than simply create one high-end device, Nokia plans to develop and release a portfolio of products that address as many of our audiences and markets as possible. Knowing that Windows Phone represents Nokia’s primary smartphone strategy, all of Nokia's smartphone engineering resources are being prioritised to make the best hardware for the forthcoming Nokia with Windows Phone devices.  Nokia will work closely with Microsoft to differentiate its devices with Mango by featuring its iconic hardware and services, while applying consistent design principles for a unique look and feel.

As Nokia embarks on the next phase of this partnership with Microsoft, we are beginning to put in place a number of activities that will help our developer community quickly prepare for the upcoming Nokia with Windows Phone devices.  We recently published a technical article on the Community Wiki; and there will soon be a number of development guides that will help developers make the most of the apps they already have in Nokia’s application store. In the Projects site, members of the Nokia developer community are beginning to contribute some interesting examples that illustrate how to build apps for Windows Phone.

In the coming months, we will deliver regular updates from experts on both sides of this partnership to help Nokia developers make the transition to developing for Windows Phone. There will also be new improvements, new benefits and simplification to our Nokia developer support offerings, so please stay tuned.

It is nice to see Microsoft Phone vice president talk about connecting people and making very good built-in apps. This is just what make Nokia software so good.

Well now we can belive this might work =]

Nokia development tools Support

sachindeorah | 25/05/2011, 07:39

Will Qt apps will support on Mango or we have to use the W7 mobile framework?

seems attractive

weiwei2 | 25/05/2011, 07:52

weiwei2

it does seems attractive. I also starts to think that may be not too bad to embrace a new platform

Nice

Nokia + Microsoft combination seems going to be a nice deal as Microsoft keep improving Windows Phone 7.

Waiting for Nokia's WP7 Phone.

Good video, it is really impressive

vin2ktalks | 25/05/2011, 09:03

Well the video is highlighted all the main features comes with Mango! Would like to know what would be other improvements? I really hate the Telephony (which include call, contacts, contact search etc) of WP7. Hope this time every thing would be improved!

innovative technology

khandbahale | 25/05/2011, 09:51

Congratulations & thanks for Mango release.. Hopefully its innovative technology
It would be nice for developers community if microsoft provide porting apps from other platforms to windows platform.

Hope for Meego

djpalshikar | 25/05/2011, 11:00

The phone seems good...but really hope nokia does not let down the Qt developers..qt is a great framework, hope that meego revives Nokia's fortunes.

Strongly appreciate to have QT working with Mango

enpronomics | 25/05/2011, 14:07

It will be a big shift if we can develop apps on QT and publish on Mango. Please Nokia take care of this issue, don't waste our efforts working on QT all this time then simply shift to other framework. PLEASE.

@sachindeorah When developing for WP, plan on using tools like Silverlight, XNA and IE9. And note: Qt will not be supported on WP devices. Thanks for checking.

Not impressed

Myatu | 25/05/2011, 19:34

1) Qt will not be supported, so that means entire development departments need to be retrained or simply laid off.

2) Microsoft show us in the video how it ties everything together. The EU lesson about Internet Explorer tie-in on Windows PCs has not been learned afterall. This is especially problematic given Microsoft's past issues with non-compliance on standards, including HTML, Javascript and the HTTP protocol.

3) Existing users of Nokia devices, like myself, are left high and dry with sudden EOL's on products and services (think Ovi)

Truthfully? I will neither continue to develop for Nokia devices, nor will I be purchasing one again. It's money down the drain.

Aren`t there any exciting news about the upcoming MeeGo phones?
WP7 still does not support Flash nor tethering nor USB-sync nor USB/Bluetooth file transfer and many more features despite of the Mango update - still seems not to be ready for wide distribution...
What about porting Qt and further open source projects to WP7? When will Microsoft lift the OSS ban?
Can`t wait to see the first MeeGo-Tablets! Hopefully Nokia will not miss this opportunity!!

NFC?

pradip7 | 30/05/2011, 06:53

will nokia's windows phone suppurt NFC?
if it is then we are ready for developing apps for it.....!

Are you serious?

drmahesh | 30/05/2011, 17:06

With the image Microsoft has in India, it isn't going to very long before Nokia moves from most trusted to least trusted brand in India, alteast.
Besides, developers don't constitute markets, customers do,and no matter how much developers rave about Microsoft, the man on the street who should be your buyer would rather go with Andriod than trust microsoft with it's heavy emphasis on tightening screws to keep all benefits to itself, will make the OS so heavy on security it wont have the inclination to run apps or games,
Go Android or atleast, stick to Symbian

Mango is cool but bring out the Meego phones and fast

haapakanni | 01/06/2011, 21:10

Mango feels great with simplified look and feel. And I must admit that the panorama UI is somewhat revolutional way of using touch screen, I love it! I hope that Microsoft will speed up the development and good work so that the platform would be more efficient. Especially easy adaption of a new hardware should made be as easy as possible. Also the multitasking doesn't seem mature enough for a smartphone.

However N900 has been running Maemo for a year and a half at the moment. It seems to be solid and mature platform. It was and still is revolutional but where are the Maemo phones with nice design? Don't get me wrong: as an engineer I loved the hardware keyboard and pretty much everything in it! So bring out the Meego phones, and do it quick, please!

It's going to be a wild ride

kenlonyai | 07/06/2011, 20:35

MS is very late getting in the game and Nokia needs a white nigh,t so where things are headed - nobody knows. Between all the OS providers and the ever improving hardware, the consumers are clearly the winners in the future.
