To accompany the new Nokia N8 device, Nokia has also released the Nokia Qt SDK Beta. The Nokia N8 is the company's first device to be integrated with Qt, a cross-platform software development environment. Qt simplifies development and makes it possible to build applications once, then deploy them across Symbian and other software platforms.
The new Nokia Qt SDK Beta enables developers to realise the potential of Qt on the Nokia N8. Leveraging the Qt Creator IDE, the Nokia Qt SDK Beta also adds features designed to streamline the creation of applications for either the Symbian or Maemo platforms. The result: a simple, one-click installation that requires no post-installation configuration; a complete tool chain for creating, developing, testing, packaging and deploying Qt applications; and the ability to accelerate development with innovative tools for UI design and computer based testing. The Qt Simulator, included, lets developers test Qt applications on their development PCs. It provides a fully functional test and debug environment, and can provide device-like data to an application, such as contacts, location, and accelerometer values.
In the first release of the Nokia Qt SDK Beta, developers can test the cross-platform capabilities of the SDK with support for a broad, but initial set of APIs. Over time, many more APIs will be added. The beta program allows developers to share their experiences with Nokia, so that the Nokia Qt SDK can evolve to meet and exceed productivity and application-creation needs.

The new Nokia N8, Nokia's first device powered by the Symbian^3 developer platform, combines internet, social networking, video, photos, music, and maps. The Nokia N8 features a 3.5-inch capacitive multi-touch screen, making it an ideal showcase for the improved UI features in the Symbian^3. Also included is a new graphics architecture that enables richer UIs, with features such as transparency and the ability to integrate video into almost any screen layout. The UI also features a single-click approach to interaction, and a new task switcher to better support Symbian OS’s full multitasking capabilities. Additionally, for software developers, the device includes Qt 4.6 (a Nokia first), Java MIDP 2.1, and Flash Lite 4.0. The Nokia N8 will ship in the third quarter, and it will retail for 370 euros.
