A new series of online tutorials has been launched on the Ovi Daily App blog. The tutorials aim to give consumers insight into the best content available for download onto their Nokia devices. Each quick tutorial highlights a specific app’s features and functionality. They also give consumers a ‘try-before-you-buy’ opportunity to make informed decisions about paid apps prior to download.
Each tutorial includes simple step-by-step instructions that are replicated simultaneously as the specific actions occur on the Nokia device. As a consumer reads through each step of the tutorial, they will see on the device how the specific app responds. In one example, the Zhiing app is used in conjunction with Ovi Maps to help two friends get together for pizza.
The first round of app tutorials include: Nimbuzz, Near Here, Zhiing, and Gravity. Going forward, a new tutorial will be added to the Ovi Daily App blog every Tuesday, creating a repository of practical information that consumers can consult whenever they need it. To create these new tutorials, Forum Nokia worked with Device Anywhere, a company that specializes in remote device testing services to set up the online experience.
To try the new tutorials, click on the “Tutorials” tab at the top of Ovi Daily App.
Do you have an app you’ve wanted to try? Send your tutorial suggestions to the Ovi Daily App team.

To help developers making the move to the Symbian^3 operating system, Forum Nokia offers several new and useful resources:
Among other new features, Symbian^3 introduces a finger-optimised UI with enhanced layout and new single-tap interaction style. This UI is described in the Forum Nokia Design and User Experience Library’s article, ‘UI in Symbian^3’.
Symbian^3’s new UI style requires minor changes for native applications. To learn how to port your existing Symbian C++ applications to Symbian^3, visit the Nokia Symbian^3 Developer’s Library.
While Web Runtime (WRT) widgets developed for earlier Symbian for S60 devices will work fine on Symbian^3but some optimisation might be needed for an even better user experience (UX). For example, a new loading indicator in the top right corner may require modifications to home screen content. Another significant change is the softkey and menu positioning in landscape mode. Applications designed to scale to 100 per cent width and height of available screen estate should not be affected by this change. But applications using native menus or resolution-specific custom layouts will most likely be affected; they may need to a redesign to some parts of the UI. For more information, check out this Forum Nokia Wiki article, ‘Web Runtime Widgets in Nokia Symbian^3 Devices’.
Flash developers, attention: While applications developed for earlier releases should still work out-of-the-box, Symbian^3 brings some new compelling features with Flash Lite 4. Learn all about them in a Forum Nokia Wiki article, ‘Flash Lite 4 in Nokia Symbian^3 Devices’.

A
Cartoon Reader Example, recently published by Forum Nokia, is the latest in a series of QtWebKit example applications. The new example shows how to retrieve daily comics using RSS and ATOM feeds. This touch-optimised application uses QtWebKit with the latest technologies, including CSS3 and HTML5, to improve the look-and-feel of the application. It can also implement application logic, such as storing data into an HTML5 web database, that traditionally would be implemented in C++ code. The Cartoon Reader is a cross-platform application, and it has been tested on Symbian S60 5th Edition, Symbian^3, Maemo5, and Windows XP. The example application also includes UI and design documentation.
QtWebKit lets application developers easily embed web content and application UI into a Qt application, even if they have minimal C++ experience. Depending on the application needs, developers can also enhance the web content with native controls and lower-level functionality using Qt and Qt Mobility APIs. In this way, developers can truly benefit from the ease of web development and the feature-richness of native development.

Speed website loading times on mobile devices by compressing, combining, and caching data. Change CSS dynamically for wider and narrower screens. Don’t force users to enter long textual data. These are just some of the many tips included in a
new Forum Nokia document that shows developers how to design and optimise websites for Maemo, iPhone, Android, and S60/Symbian devices. Nokia devices covered in the document include the Nokia N900, Nokia N97 and N97 Mini, Nokia X6, Nokia 5800 XpressMusic, and Nokia N79.

Flowella, an easy-to-use tool for creating design prototypes, is now available for download from Forum Nokia. Developers can use Flowella to create prototypes without creating a single line of code. Instead, prototypes are built using images of screen mock-ups and defining links between the screens. With this information, Flowella creates an Adobe Flash Lite 3.0 application or Web Runtime (WRT) widget. These applications can then be run either on one of more than 70 Nokia devices or in a simulator supplied with Flowella, enabling the application interaction to be assessed.
