Nokia Now Signing Symbian Apps for Free

pkrass | 16 August, 2010 09:00

Developers can now have their Qt Symbian (with Nokia Smart Installer for Symbian), Symbian C++, Flash Lite applications, and Symbian Themes signed for free by Nokia. To get the free signing, developers must only provide some information and follow a few new steps during their application submission to publish to Ovi.

Under the new arrangement, publishers no longer need to pay to get a publisher ID or have their apps signed. Nokia, by essentially removing the ‘public beta’ for Symbian Signing, is demonstrating to developers its commitment to review the initial investment costs associated with obtaining a publisher ID and getting their apps signed. “This greatly simplifies the publishing process by making it a one-stop process for publishers,” says Purnima Kochikar, VP of Forum Nokia.

To reach million of consumers worlwide, publish your apps on Ovi Store today.

Remote Device Access Offers Online App Testing

pkrass | 16 August, 2010 09:00

Forum Nokia now offers two services for Remote Device Access (RDA), providing developers with working Nokia devices over the Internet. The first service is the free Remote Device Access, which lets developers test their mobile applications and services remotely on various Nokia devices; the main features are remote controlling a device, installing and running applications, transferring files, and analyzing log files in real-time. The second is a paid service called the Nokia Virtual Developer Lab, which is powered by DeviceAnywhere; it provides developers real-time access to mobile devices connected to live global networks.

Using these two RDA services, developers can easily test and demo their apps prior to final release. In addition, DeviceAnywhere hosts weekly tutorials on the Ovi Daily App blog that demonstrate the key features and functionalities of leading apps in Ovi Store.

Nokia’s Ovi Store just keeps on growing. Mobile consumers can now access Ovi Store from 190 countries, and 90 per cent of them can access Ovi Store in their local language, thanks to the site’s ability to display 30 languages, including everything from English, French, and Spanish to Vietnamese, Malay, and Indonesian. In fact, Ovi Store’s most active markets – as measured by the number of downloads – are a diverse group (listed in alphabetical order): China, Germany, India, Indonesia, Italy, Mexico, Saudi Arabia, Thailand, Turkey, and the U.K. To keep these consumers connected, nearly 90 operators now offer mobile billing for Ovi Store in 26 national markets.

Ovi Store can also handle a wide range of Nokia devices – 120 models in all. The site’s consumers appreciate cutting-edge technology; six of the top 10 downloading devices are S60 5th Edition (Touch UI) devices.

Multiple releases and user-experience improvements to Ovi Store have improved browsing and search, resulting in greater numbers of downloads. Daily traffic on Ovi Store now tops 1.7 million downloads a day, and several individual apps have exceeded 1 million downloads.

Looking ahead, the Ovi Store team promises even more local languages, additional billing support, and lots more apps. Together, these features will continue to make Ovi Store the easiest way for mobile consumers to discover and download the latest apps, games, and more for their Nokia devices.

Have You Experienced Forum Nokia’s User Experience Service?

pkrass | 23 July, 2010 17:10

Mobile developers can now have their apps evaluated by Forum Nokia user experience (UX) experts and partners, who use mobile usability heuristics and Nokia’s own UX Evaluation Model. For a reasonable fee, developers can receive a written evaluation that clearly identifies and illustrates any UX issues, then provides clear suggestions for how the issues can be resolved. Developers can also receive end-user feedback to their apps thanks to Forum Nokia partner Mob4Hire, which has access to some 45,000 mobile users in 150 countries.

Six mobile developers recently had their apps evaluated by Forum Nokia UX experts and real-world end users; then they used the feedback to improve their apps. Case studies of these six developers have just been published on the Forum Nokia site. The case studies cover the six developers' apps (five of which are now offered on Nokia's Ovi Store): Earthcomber, MakeMyTrip, Mobile Documents, Shazam, Speedhero, and TuneWiki.

Important Update for Developers Using the Nokia Qt SDK Beta and Qt Mobility 1.0.0 APIs for Symbian

pkrass | 01 July, 2010 19:46

Developers who have used the Nokia Qt SDK beta to create Symbian apps that use the 1.0.0 Qt mobility APIs must repackage their apps with the 1.0.1 version of the mobility APIs. Nokia has discovered a deficiency in the 1.0.0 APIs that causes apps to crash when devices are updated to a later version of the Qt libraries. Fortunately, Nokia caught the deficiency at an early stage, and very few apps and developers are affected. The issue applies only to Symbian and only to applications that use and are packaged with the 1.0.0 Mobility APIs. The deficiency has been fixed in both the 1.0.1 APIs and the Nokia Qt SDK version 1.0.

Any developer now using the beta version of the Nokia Qt SDK for Symbian should move to the 1.0 version. Developers who used the Nokia Qt SDK beta for Maemo, however, do not need to repackage their apps, although they may wish to move to the SDK 1.0 version to keep current. Also, to protect consumers, Nokia will soon introduce a mechanism for Ovi that detects which mobility APIs are bundled with a submitted app. Once the mechanism is in place, apps with the 1.0.0 mobility APIs will not be accepted by Ovi, and developers will be instructed to repackage their apps with the 1.0.1 mobility APIs.

Read more about this issue on the Qt Labs blog.

Java Verified Program Updates Status, Adds Developer Resources

pkrass | 01 July, 2010 16:44

The Unified Testing Initiative (UTI), home to the Java Verified program, has become an independent, not-for-profit industry association run by AT&T, LG, Motorola, Nokia, Oracle, Orange, Samsung, Sony Ericsson and Vodafone. At the same time, it has launched the Java Verified Submission Portal, released an online Table of Supported Devices, and launched Simple App Testing to gain Java Verified endorsement cost-effectively. These ‘simple’ apps, which account for the majority of mobile apps offered, are those that do not require midlet permissions.

Forum Nokia's User Experience Program expands to include thousands of test users around the world

As a developer, you can test the functionality of your new application all day long, but there's nothing like a fresh pair of eyes to really shed light on what really works and what can be improved relative to the user experience of an application. That's why Forum Nokia is proud to announce that it is augmenting its design expertise available through its User Experience (UX) Evaluation service with the valuable crowd-sourced user feedback that comes from Mob4Hire

While the Forum Nokia UX Evaluation is conducted by a design expert who uses platform style guides and their own knowledge to suggest flows and wireframes, the user feedback available from Mob4Hire consists of instantaneous responses from everyday mobile application users. This unfiltered, unbiased feedback is invaluable for developers who want to refine their UX and services before submitting it to the live market environment of Ovi store.

Like the UX Evaluation, the Mob4Hire service is available for a low price, but both of these services are much more inexpensive than hiring in-house resources for application UX development and refinement.

To find out more and register for these services, please visit the User Experience Services page

Availability of the Nokia Qt SDK 1.0

jasonblack | 23 June, 2010 14:19

The Nokia Qt SDK 1.0 is available starting today, and it offers a true cross-platform development environment allowing developers to create applications for both Symbian and Maemo devices. Installation is easy, as it only requires one installation package that downloads all of the Qt and Symbian/Maemo components that developers need using the same Qt Creator 2.0 as standard Qt SDK’s for use on Windows, Linux and Mac (beta).

The Nokia Qt SDK 1.0 includes the Qt 4.6 libraries plus additional API’s for mobile development. With a fast, new simulator along with on-device debugging and the ability to compile to both .sis (Symbian) or .deb (Maemo) packages, it provides developers with a great opportunity to start creating amazing apps right away.

Availability of Nokia Smart Installer for Symbian
Qt developers can use the new Nokia Qt SDK 1.0 to easily bundle the Nokia Smart Installer for Symbian SIS with their app SIS to reach millions of users with Nokia Symbian devices worldwide. When an end user downloads an app, the Nokia Smart Installer for Symbian will check for dependencies, and if any missing files or Qt libraries are detected the Nokia Smart Installer for Symbian will download them from Nokia servers.

For more information, please visit the Qt section of Forum Nokia

Ovi Store intake for Qt apps
Finally, Qt developers can now upload Qt Symbian apps targeting both the Nokia N97 mini and Nokia X6, as well as Qt Maemo apps for the Nokia N900 mobile computer. The Nokia N8 will be supported when it’s released later this year, and additional Nokia Symbian (5.0 and 3.1/3.2) devices will be supported in the future, allowing Qt developers to reach a growing market of Nokia users worldwide. Applications will be published to Ovi Store beginning next month.
