Locago, an exciting new map browser app that features directions, multiple information layer overlays, and real-time dynamic content updates has found worldwide success through Nokia’s Ovi Store. The app, which was developed by the mapping and geocoding experts at
Idevio AB has been downloaded
over two million times in more than 200 countries.

Locago's maps feature street-level detail on a global scale, pulling information from over 60 different data sources and content-rich information layers that mash-up Locago's maps with third-party information sources. In addition to being a popular consumer app, Locago has created an opportunity for other developers to create additional mash-ups layers of their own. These layers include everything from basic location data to geotagged Wikipedia articles and even real estate listings – you can get directions to a neighborhood, learn about its history and find out what properties are for sale using nothing but Locago and one of 59 supported Nokia devices.
The app works whether or not users have a GPS-enabled phone, requiring only an internet connection to function.
This flexibility has enabled global adoption of the app, with top downloads coming from countries as diverse as India, Germany and Mexico – proving that no matter where you go, Locago is never very far away.
Locago's open API allows other developers to add more layers and functionality to the app, allowing the creation of custom layers using straightforward XML coding. Developers have added layers for everything from finding active webcams in the Czech Republic to alternative fuel stations in Sweden.
A
review published late last year on the site
Know Your Mobile said the app was recommended for "
anyone who is going travelling" and called it "
an extremely useful app."
Idevio plans to build on their success by releasing an updated version of Locago that will contain even more content, support more handsets and come with a new paid upgrade option.
"It's fantastic that so many people love Locago at Ovi! Our map compression and streaming does wonders on low and mid-range phones without 3G." says Patric Nordström, CEO of Idevio, the makers of Locago.

Locago is available for free and
Locago+ is available for $1.99 USD from the Ovi Store.
