As the rapid adoption of mobile apps accelerates, consumers seek easy and efficient ways to download, access, and organize their apps. Biskero's solution to address these needs is Kero Mobile. Kero Mobile is an easy-to-use app that serves as a portal to a vast variety of 1,400 different apps spanning from entertainment to news. Aside from Kero Mobile, Biskero has published over 30 apps on Ovi Store and aims to continue its success by creating new apps for Nokia devices. In less than five months since launch, the company's free and paid apps have been downloaded more than 1.8 million times in Ovi Store from more than 190 markets.

Biskero, headquartered in the United States, is a developer at the forefront of utilizing cloud technology for mobile apps. Kero Mobile, one of the company's most popular apps and named after the abbreviated moniker of the company, leverages cloud technology as well as server and client side technologies to give consumers access to its vast catalog of apps without the need to install them directly on the device.

Biskero uses a variety of tools for app development. The company primarily uses Adobe Flash Professional IDE and Eclipse, as well as Photoshop and Carbide. Biskero also found app testing tools to be a fundamental part of their app development process. Initially, the company tested its apps using Adobe Device Central, but turned to Forum Nokia for real device testing. Leveraging Forum Nokia's Remote Device Access, Biskero tests their apps on actual devices running the latest firmware. Remote Device Access enables access to a live device over the Internet, and this offers the possibility for developers to reduce the effort on testing and demoing during app development.

"Nokia provides a complete toolkit of top-notch technologies which allows us to express our creativity to the developer community," said Alessandro Pace, Mobile Architect for Biskero and Forum Nokia Champion. "I also look forward to running our apps on Nokia's future releases of its Symbian devices."

Kero Mobile was released in Ovi Store on September 2010 and has since grown to house a catalog of 1,400 apps. This free-to-download app includes 11 different categories, such as games, music, blogs, social, sports, and more. Examples of apps available within Kero Mobile range from the classic game of tic-tac-toe, an app that allows consumers to browse and buy music, to popular Twitter feeds.

Biskero's secret behind Kero Mobile's fast growth is the company's focus on developing apps that are simple and offer a single feature for consumers. Based on consumers demand for apps that only provide specific content from the Internet, Biskero designed an app template that could be used to create these single-feature web apps within Kero Mobile.

The apps available within Kero Mobile are developed using Adobe Flash Lite (versions 2.x, 3.x and 4).  These apps also employ a mix of technologies such as data networking, location via GPS, accelerometer, Flash video and streaming audio and video. Most apps accessible by Kero Mobile take one to two weeks to develop, and the process is supported by Kero Mobile's backend platform based on Amazon web services and open source technologies.

Other perks for consumers include:

  • Ability to browse content before downloading
  • A convenient way to organize content
  • Easy access to favorite content

Kero Mobile also gives consumers the freedom to write reviews and suggest content that should be developed in the future. This gives Biskero a competitive advantage by directly receiving feedback on any user interface or user experience issue with the app.

One consumer said, "Kero Mobile is great for its smooth and intuitive layout."

While the benefits of this app to consumers are significant, Biskero also promotes Kero Mobile to developers as an independent distribution channel and next generation app/platform. By urging developers to create more apps that can be accessed through Kero Mobile, Biskero hopes to maintain and grow its consumer base. Currently, the app is already seeing high recurring usage by consumers.

"The most popular apps this year will be mobile games and apps that connect to a user's social life and provide real benefits for users," said Alessandro Pace. "With Kero Mobile, we plan to continually deliver apps that reflect these trends."

To encourage third-party developers, Biskero provides several benefits for those who release apps on Kero Mobile. One major benefit is the potential for increased monetization and downloads through the availability of both location-based mobile ads and Flash mobile ads. Developers also receive 100% of their revenue stream.

Kero Mobile has received tremendous positive feedback from its developer community.

"Kero Mobile is a useful and strategic mobile application - an excellent idea that brings together different kinds of content for the users, such as games, news, music, etc." said Atila Correira, mobile developer and designer at Virtue Studio, creator of Soccer's Referee for Kero Mobile. "I appreciate Biskero's help with the integration of my app and for providing tips on shared experiences."

Leonardo Risuleo of Small Screen Design said, "It was an absolute pleasure to work with Kero Mobile. The integration process for my app was a breeze. The app features an impressive number of apps that provides plenty of news, information and entertainment content. Definitely an app your device deserves!"

Biskero was also a finalist in Nokia's 2010 Calling All Innovators contest and a semifinalist in Adobe MAX 2009 Awards.

Kero Mobile is available for free on all Nokia Symbian devices that support Ovi Store. It is also available for all New Symbian devices, including the N8 and E7.
