Two years ago, TenPearls LLC set out to create productivity, utility, educational, games and themed mobile apps - all of which appeal to a broad global audience ranging from children to adults. The company utilized Qt, Java, WRT and, HTML for Nokia's Symbian and Series 40 platforms for app development as well as CarbidUI to develop themes. Within the two-year period, TenPearls 11 apps have been downloaded more than 1.4 million times in Ovi Store across more than 190 markets.
Established in 2004, TenPearls LLC is a privately-held global company, headquartered in Washington D.C. with an international office in Karachi, Pakistan, and sales and marketing offices based in the United Arab Emirates. Founded by Imran Aftab, President and Zeeshan Aftab, Chief Operating Officer, the company was created with a purpose to help organizations deliver their technology more efficiently.
Today, TenPearls is comprised of 90 dedicated employees that have served diverse clientele, from an array of Fortune 500 and 2000 corporations such as Sprint to high-growth small and medium-sized businesses, Motionsoft for example, to enterprising start-ups, like eRaffle.
The origin of the company's name is the combination of two words "ten" and "pearls" as they represent the symbols of perfection: the number ten is the perfect score out of ten, and dating back to ancient times, the pearl has been the symbol of intelligent decisions, good luck and hard work.
In 2009, TenPearls expanded their technology practices to include a variety of ingenious mobile apps. Boasting a diverse skill set distributed among a number of teams, the company has 10 developers that are well versed in Symbian development, along with an internal R&D team consisting of product managers, creative artists, visualizers, software developers and quality assurance engineers. With their strong background of savvy developers, the company has recently broadened their development expertise in mobile platforms and plans to create apps for Nokia Windows Phone 7 mobile phones.
TenPearl apps currently available in Ovi Store include:
Beyond reaching one million downloads in Ovi Store, TenPearls' other recent significant accomplishment includes recognition from Nokia Pakistan. TenPearls received first place for its mobile app, uTrack Lite, in the "Calling All Innovators Pakistan 2010 developers" competition in the local apps category - held for the first time in Pakistan last year. The company was rewarded with approximately $12,000 US dollars. In addition, the largest English newspaper in Pakistan, Dawn, awarded TenPearls with a contract to develop all of their mobile apps.
Above is a picture of Mr. Shabbir Hussain, Assistant General Manager (on left) handing the Dawn.com contract of mobile apps development to Zeeshan Aftab, COO of TenPearls.
uTrack Lite was initially developed by TenPearls and published in Ovi Store on January 5, 2011. The app was created to provide consumers with a way of managing their daily tasks to easily and effectively streamline their life. After a thorough trial of the available Nokia SDKs, the TenPearls team selected a hybrid approach, using Qt and C++ for app development, because it offered the most developer-friendly framework.
Within 30 days the team had completed the uTrack Lite app and were quite impressed with the quick and efficient development and testing process. During the process, the team immediately noticed how powerful the Qt platform was, noting that it allowed for code reuse and distribution on supported devices, access to a variety of rich APIs that simplified many of the difficult tasks, and experienced no issues in setting up the development environment. Additionally, the developer team believes that Qt is easy to use for Symbian app development and the team is impressed how apps built using Qt can run on a variety of phones, supporting multiple platforms (such as mobile and desktop) making it a very handy tool.
"We are so happy that we selected the Qt framework to develop our very first app for Nokia phones," says Imran Aftab, President of TenPearls. "Not only did we find that Qt was very useful and offered the most cutting edge technologies, but we also found the development process to be much faster using the framework - within four weeks our team completed the app and we were quite impressed. We're looking forward to developing this app for the Windows Mobile Phone 7 platform in the near future."
Aftab continues, "I'll never forget the day when uTrack, our very first mobile app, won Nokia's challenges such as producing five unique apps in a span of just six months, thanks to the Nokia Developer team and their impressive platforms."
The award-winning app is a great solution for consumers looking to organize their daily personal and work-related tasks, as it allows them to define and manage tasks with to-do lists and post-it virtual walls through a user-friendly interface.
With just a glance at their personally created uTrack wall, users can easily visualize daily tasks and know the status. At any point in time, the user can delete tasks or clean their wall completely. Users also have the ability to set a 'due date' for each task, 'assign' it to others through email notification, and 'set calendar reminders' that can be synced with Outlook.
Other unique features users can take advantage of include:

One user comments, "uTrack Lite has really helped me get organized with my daily duties. The graphics are great and I love that I can take snapshots of my wall and send it to my friends."
Animal 101 is another successful app developed by TenPearls using the Qt framework. This app was developed in only two weeks and is the ultimate mobile learning app - providing an engaging way for children ages three to eight to learn about animals.
Equipped with visually appealing drawings and brilliant graphics, the voice-driven game presents an entertainment environment for children who have not learned to read yet; children can play the game or just browse the various animals and learn from pictures rather than text. This is a fantastic app for parents and children to learn 101 new and interesting facts about a variety of animals.
One parent who downloaded the app comments, "My friend recommended Animal 101 as a great way to teach my kids about animals. I must say that it's far better than any other animal app. The graphics are worth the purchase and the clever hints and voice-over is very attractive for children. Kudos to the developers behind this app!"
Another user comments, "I recently downloaded a great app, Animal 101. It helps children pronounce animal names and allows them to guess the animals by giving nice and subtle clues. Kids are simply glued to this app. I highly recommend this app for every parent of with young kids!"

In addition to creating successful and alluring apps, TenPearls has raised awareness of their apps through the company's own various social media channels such as Facebook and YouTube. TenPearls has also made considerable efforts to promote their apps in Ovi Store.
Each app developed by TenPearls has been listed in the 'featured apps' section in Ovi Store during two-week duration along with the company's banner made visible on Ovi Store's website to attract more users. During this 14-day promotional period, TenPearls experienced a spike in the daily download numbers, ranging from 9,000 to 35,000 for each app.
"We enjoy developing apps and making them available to a global audience through Ovi Store," says Imran, "Thanks to the Nokia Developer team and the developer technologies available, we have been able to build upon our success and create tremendous value for our customers. We especially love reading the reviews published on Ovi Store and aspire for more after reading about the experiences and success stories from different developers around the world."
TenPearls is currently working on creating more apps for Nokia phones, such as "World Mania," a fun learning social app for Facebook to test and enhance a user's knowledge about countries around the world. For the World Mania app, the developers plan to use Qt to implement the new Notifications API function, and it will be available for all New Symbian phones. The company plans to introduce World Mania in Ovi Store in the coming months.
Free and paid versions of TenPearls apps are available in English for Nokia's Symbian and Series 40 phones.
