RFID/NFC powered mobile gaming (Running with the PAC!)

I demonstrated our mobile mixed reality game PAC-LAN at the Pervasive Games (PerGames 2006) workshop held in Dublin at the start of May.  The game was extremely well received and we generated considerable interest in the RFID shells developed by Nokia for the 5140 phones.PAC-LAN Mixed Reality Mobile Phone Game

For me its particular strength is its simplicity for the user as there is something very intuitive about simply touching the item with which you wish to interact. Whilst researchers often hail the coming of the ‘internet of things’ the combination of mobile phones with RFID/NFC is a definitive enabling technology for this vision.

Currently the technology is only available on a few models in the Nokia series of devices but I cant wait until it deployed across the range as I think there is enormous potetial for entertainment applications aside from the obvious logistical solutions.

Hey Paul,

Seriously cool. This is what separates real mobile development from merely doing desktop development on tiny screens -- stuff you just can't do sitting at a desk.

Have you played with any other alternative input techniques? I'm a barcode geek from back in the day when I was writing decode routines in assembler, long before 2D imagers were available. There's an open source UPC decoder for S60 phones at http://sourceforge.net/projects/barcr-reader/, some commercial code out there, and of course you can always hook up a barcode scanner via Bluetooth or cable.

Alternative input techniques for mobile devices are also getting media traction. There was an interesting feature article in the May 24 edition of the Wall Street Journal (North American edition) by Jessica Vascello discussing barcode links to mobile services. Unfortunately you need to be a subscriber to see the online posting of The Staid Bar Code Gets a Hip New Life.

I did look at the various 2-D bar codes but I found that they weren’t as quick or easy to use as the RFID tags. I found that the focusing can be problematic and they whole thing could take seconds to do compared with the microseconds of the RFID tags. The other advantage with RFID is that you can also write to them which gives you other interesting possibilities. Main advantage with the visual codes is the proliferation of camera phones but I think that RFID/NFC has the more possibilities particularly in the area of micro payments.
There have been games that use them such as the ConQwest game from Big Area Games in the USA(http://www.playareacode.com/) which used semacodes and an interesting picture blog system in Japan which used the QR codes . There was a project in the UK by the BBC which used the color codes as part of its Coast to Coast Series on signs marking locations of special interest. If I remember correctly they had a S60 application for the decoding.
I do have another project which used the write facilitywhich I will talk more about soon.

stenlik Hi,

your RFID based game sounds realy cool. Unfortunatelly RFID reader kit is not available on any Symbian device as I know... and 5140 is the only one... Will be any new mobile equipped with it?? It's almost two years when it was presentatred on CeBIT and the enthuziazm silently dissapear?

How it is used on Nokia 5410, I expect some Java API using from MIDlet notifying the chip code event to be catched by observing application? Could you add more technical/practical info here?

Bye

You are correct in that the client applications are programmed in J2ME and utilize the Contactless Communications API. Nokia provide this as part of their Field Force solutions package and it very straight forward to use. Your right about no series 60 yet, which I agree is a great pit, I havent heard of one in the pipeline but looking at the new 5500 it may well come later for this device as it seems to be the evolution of the 5140.

Hi Paul,

do you have any info on the current status of RFID/NFC? I can't seem to find any info on support for it in newer Nokia phones.
Do you know of any other API to access RFID?

The Nokia 6131 NFC is available and the accesss is simply via the contactless comms JSR 257
