Mobile Phone Barcode Scanners - for a magazine

Hi,
I am working on a new magazine design and I would like to know more about using mobile phone scanners.

We would like to look like we are up with technology and I have seen barcodes on mobile phone ads. I would be interested in finding our more info on how these barcodes work and how I could incorporate them into our magazine.

Any advice would be great.
