2700classic standby screen illegible

Hi! i recently got a new 2700 classic and like its features except that the standby screen with backlight off is totally illegible. Is not there a way, some firmware update or some tweak or some application to make the backlight remain on with a very very little glow just enough to enable me to check any missed calls or messages without hitting a key again and again.
