Can I do voip on the c3-00 (wifi) s40 - sip
Hi,
I'm interessed by the nokia c3-00 for it's wifi capability.
I'm new in the "nokia world", so I understand that the S40 is a little "obsolete" plateform (even if it's the most used in the world)
And as I see here: http://wiki.forum.nokia.com/index.php/VoIP_support_in_Nokia_devices
the c3-00 doesn't support "native" VOIP (SIP protocole)
I would like to use a SIP client in Wifi mode when wifi is available (at home, in public hotspot etc ...)
Is there a possibility to do that with this phone ?? An added APP buy on the ovi store ??? Or a native built-in SIP client in the phone ???

Welcome to the Forum Nokia Developer discussion board, as this DiBo concentrates on development related issues, you might find more end-user problems related Dibo better suited for your query. Here's link for one: http://discussions.europe.nokia.com/
Re: Can I do voip on the c3-00 (wifi) s40 - sip
All Nokia C3-00 I used, did not offer the [post=436439]native SIP client[/post], whyever. Furthermore, I am not aware of a App (Java MIDlet; J2ME) adding this functionality. If you find an App, do not forget to update this thread. Until then, I would consider a Nokia E5 or a used Nokia E71, Nokia E63, Nokia E61i. Alternatively, go for Nokia touch devices (either Symbian or Series 40).
Re: Can I do voip on the c3-00 (wifi) s40 - sip
I had a standard response of the nokia customer service (in canada):
> In response to your concern, we would like to inform you that the Nokia C3
> supports Voice over IP (VoIP). You may download VoIP applications compatible
> to your device from Ovi Store.
And they explain me the process in ovi store ...
The good point: there is a response from nokia
The bad point: there is not such app for voip in ovi strore for this phone (s40)
I will let you know if I find a solution ... perhaps there is a way to install some java package of the c3-01 on c3-00 or other jar .... or and old jar like skype lite .....

Perhaps they mixed C3-01 and C3-00 in Nokia side as the first one has built in VoIP support and the latter does not. Did they mention any VoIP app names that can be downloaded from Ovi to Series40 ?

Re: Can I do voip on the c3-00 (wifi) s40 - sip
unfortunatly, I had the same "canned response" from an other "email specialist" for canada customercare ....
They told me to install fring ... but for j2me, fring is limited to text chat ....
What I do not understand is that C3-01 (Series 40 6th Edition, Feature Pack 1) has the VOIP API, and that C3-00 (Series 40 6th Edition .. NO Feature Pack 1) hasn't this capability ....
Perhaps my question is "absurd" ... but is there a way to install the "Series 40 6th Edition, Feature Pack 1" on the C3-00, or some part of Feature Pack ????
Re: Can I do voip on the c3-00 (wifi) s40 - sip
No, that would involve firmware hacking. Looking at the alternative device models, that is not worth the effort, I think.
Re: Can I do voip on the c3-00 (wifi) s40 - sip
the nokia customer service contacted me by phone: 1 good point for nokia ;-)
They explain me that it's "pure" marketing to not provide VOIP to the C3-00. The target market for C3-01 (with voip) is africa, india ... where VOIP seems ok, but for North America/Europe they don't want to provide this option. I suspect a pression from "mobile operator" ... if nokia provided voip for this kind of phone (wifi), the operator wouldn't distribute this phone on their brand (in my case rogers.ca) ....
So, the representative was sorry about this situation. He explains me that there is a skype mobile in developpement which perhaps, in the near future, will provide this kind of functionality (phone over wifi) ... so cross our fingers !
