Great!! Such kind of opportunities can really boost up anybody's morale and the zeal to work more.
Unfortunately, I can't participate as I don't have the required development environment.

Thank you for sharing this Hamish!

I completly agree to Pooja here, Development environment is an issue for multiple developers due to the requirement of Win 8.

I'm considering the possibility to participate. Who knows I may get a slot on that top 64 :) I'm still working on my app so it will all depends on the time available. I do have a day job :)
I've updated my machine from windows 7 to 8 this week and it worked great. Much faster than on VMware emulator :)

Another great opportunity (With 64 winners).
I upgraded my Windows 7 machine to Windows 8, and it's working fine you just need a Windows 8 Pro x64 and a SLAT-capable CPU to support the Hyper-V for the WP8 emulator.
Re: New contest: Windows Phone Next App Star
I upgraded my machine a couple of weeks ago, and now I have a Lumia 820 to test my apps (thanks !), but I think the deadline is too close for me, and probably for many developers that might not have an application already under development. I'm just starting to research and experiment with the APIs I will need to use for my next application, and as I only devote a couple of hours a day to mobile development, I'm not even thinking on the possibility to participate.
In addition to that, I have found several issues and conflicts between the emulator (Hyper-V in general) and other tools I need running on my machine (specifically, virtualization software and Cisco VPN clients), and when everything seems to be working well, some SDK update gets installed and breaks everything again... It has happened a couple of times, so I decided not to install any VS updates by now.
But I think the contest is a good opportunity and a good move from Microsoft, but maybe they should launch other similar opportunities in the coming months, so no one is left out.
Best of luck for those participating !
Re: New contest: Windows Phone Next App Star
I must say this is an excellent opportunity! Since Imagine Cup is also in its way, participants can also compete in this competition...
I'll surely participate, however my apps would all rely on Javascript+html5! Lets see how they'd be judged..
(I won't be using any Native API's)
But nevertheless, lets spread this good news!
PS: And yes, I've all the required environment! *Win8 was from the beta releases! And I installed WP8 SDK to test the HTML5 capabilities!
Re: New contest: Windows Phone Next App Star
I have just submitted my App(1 March).
I hope it will published before Deadline(5th March)..
Finger Crossed .
