I have the exact same problem, only I've already configured the jad & jar mimetypes.
but it still won't download :(

it's made to act that way, of course!.
but try to search in the System Registry after anything related to nokia, and delete it.
start menu -> run -> regedit
that has previously worked for me...
when the server outputs the file, i creates a linefeed at each <% %> tag
Somewhere (in the xml-specs, if memory serves) is it written, that the <?xml?> tag must be the very first of the files...
now I've tried Apache server, but it still won't download :(
(and I have also set the jad and jar mime-types, just in case you should ask)
I've installed the Wap Gateway Simulator and the 3410...
All you have to do, is configure your webserver's mime-types for wml.
that should be it
My personal experiences show, that the paint() method only gets called upon application start, and when you call it manually using repaint().
I can't download my homemade midlets from my server, even though I've set the mime-types for .jad & .jar
