So it is safe to assume that I cannot hide it then? The API seemed to hint that it could be if the implementer offered it which I am assuming is not the case here.

It takes up UI real estate and basically hides any graphics behind it (i.e. text). On such a small screen thats not desirable, and if the connection goes down we inform the user at that point anyway...
