Can anyone tell about datapath and how it is used?

In S60 help file it is written that CMMDataPath - Abstract utility class that moves data from a single data source to a single data sink, via a codec if required.

I am trying to write a controller plugin which will interact with DevSound and then devSound will select HwDevice depending on mime type (amr, mp3) for encoding/decoding.

In this case what is the role of data path and how it should be implemented.
