Firmware - Software - Memory card questions

I'm technically moderately knowledgable but really new at this so please be gentle.

To put my questions in context, I'm asking about recent GSM capable phone models. If answering requires a specific model assume 6600, which appears to be a pretty generic J2ME platform. If someone wants to suggest something else please chime in.

Is there Nokia generic firmware for most recent phone models? How do I get it?
Will the generic firmware successfully interact with carrier SIM cards?
If there isn't generic firmware, how do you pick carrier firmware for maximum functionality/compatibility?
For phones with memory cards, can you run applications from the card or only access data? I know it might be slow.

For certain phones you can update the phone firmware yourself through http://europe.nokia.com/softwareupdate
Unfortunately 6600 does not support this.

Also note that the software update updates the firmware to the latest firmware version for that specific phone. For example 6630 (which can be supported through the above mentioned site) is a S60 2nd Edition FP2 phone. You cannot update the phone to any other (read newer) platform edition (to get more capabilities for example).

With 6600 you need to visit the local Nokia Service Point to get the firmware updated

What do you mean with this? S60 devices do not yet have capabilities to access the SIM card address book (from Java ME). Also SATSA-APDU (which allows you to exchange some simple commands with applets on the SIM card) is not yet supported on S60 platform. There are some Series 40 devices out there supporting this. Note: You cannot change the firmware of S60 phone to Series 40 platform either.

I do not see point in getting a carrier specific firmware on the device. Also it is not possible with the Nokia Software Updater, When you update the firmware, you cannot change to different firmware variant for that specific phone.

Unfortunately you cnanot downgrade the firmware on the phone.

My Phone is running too slow...and the paging memory decreased to 1.86M after i'd updated the firmware...
what can i do to improve my phone's performance
also i want ask about a firmware version with arabic support.

Do not know about paging memory decreasing during the updates.
The Arabic support requires that the phone was sold in a region in which phones are sold with Arabic support, the software updater will then install the same language pack during the upgrade. You could also try to visit your local Nokia suppoort center and ask if they can install the Arabic language pack on your phone.
