How can you think to support JSR249 if you doesn't support neither JSR256 on your flagship phone?

Future Java Platforms. Thats will be great. even the Series 40 6th Edition is amazingly great than any else, when compared to all Mobile Handsets of this range. We all believe that the future will be much brighter for the Java Platform.

series 40 was greay/excellent many years ago, now that we can buy a 600MHz phone with Android 2.2 for 99€ I really don't see any future for series 40.
if you can see it, don't tell me that there is someone who spent less than 99€ for a phone and than spend money to buy apps for phones.

series 40 will be ok for free apps, nothing good for the others.

With new browser capabilities on S40, they are as good as any other Smart phones - when you compare the experience with - cloud based mobile apps - which is a big buzz word now - due to easy of development (using HTML/CSS/JS) - pay as you go feature.

These new cloud based apps do not need any big computing/storage power of the client device - the phone - the performance will just depend on the network connectivity/bandwidth - which is same for both for smartphones or featurephones S40 - say either GPRS/EDGE/3G or Wifi/WiMax/LTE

there are apps and apps, and there are many situations, often there is no connectivity and an offline apps is required.

With HTML 5, even the mobile Cloud apps will be able to provide you will required offline user experiences to cover the no-connectivity time & work. Thou mobile is a connected device now... with networks available in trains and flights too.

Future of native mobile apps will remain with top 2/3 leading mobile platforms of the world, and for all other platforms - best & cheapest way to go - for the developers to " reach them out" is by - harnessing the power of Cloud based Mobile apps - which in turn will slowly move towards HTML 5/ CSS3 & Java Script combinations. See the Web development tools provided by Nokia for S40.

The first leading mobile platform of the world sells phones starting from 99€ with 600MHz processor and 256MB of RAM, who needs a S40 with HTML5 apps?

The predictions are that Masses will prefer to get a Cloud powered mobile device, which can run all applications and solves all their connectivity needs for price tags even below 99$.
If all apps I need to work are available on the cloud - with all data safe in the cloud - and I can access that with my simple phone without any major User Experience issues - why will I go and buy a app from App store - download it on my smartphone - do complex navigation to use it.

Why can't using facebook on mobile be made as simple as using it on Internet/PC browser ?? why you need a app for it.

No one give anything for free, the apps sold now in app stores will be sold in "cloud style" for web browsers.
In any case, there are really few users that buy a phone under 99€ and than uses cloud services.

Generally who need/want this services buy a smartphone (>=99€) and not an advanced feature phone (<=99€).
Personally I think that S40 was an incredible good platform but now its out of time.

I'm interested in JavaME.Next (I'm a big fan of JavaME) but I need to admit that I don't expect anything good from oracle, they are late and they are not investing enough to compete, just think that they are continuing with LWUIT, ok its good but its out of time.

I write mobile software for food, I eat thanks to a handmade UI Toolkit written in JavaME ported to Bada, Symbian Java, Blackberry, Android. I love feature phones but this is the era of smartphones.

Users wants a UAC like tablet with rich UI and not a feature phone with some javascript.
This is my humble opinion, nothing more.

I too love JavaME and interested in JavaME.Next, but can't see much light in the future for it. :(

Good news, Cell ID support in Location API (JSR 179) is now available in Java SDK 1.0 for new Nokia S40 6th edition devices. This means we can offer many more geo-proximity/location based sevices even to these devices without GPS chip on them.
