Background app listening for capture event from camera app

I would like to make a python application for a N95 which trickers when the build in photo application takes a picture.
How can I let my app run in the background, and pop up whenever the user captures a picture?

I have seen other applications doing this, prompting the user asking if they want to share with an online photo gallery.

Those applications were most probably written in Symbian C++. It can't be done in Python.
