Project: Controlling Robotic Car using Symbain Device

Hi, I am a Final Year Engineering Student and am doing a project on Controlling a Robotic Car using two s60v5 devices.

Project Details:
A remote device (phone) will call the device (in auto answer mode) connected to the robotic car.
Voice Commands will be given to navigate the car.
The phone will have an app to detect the voice command and give corresponding signal to the car controller using USB connection.

I am new to Symbian programming and to the forum.
I have knowledge of C++ so will understand Qt for Symbian.

Please help me find answers for following:
1. Is it possible for an App to recognize voice?
2. Can it send signals via USB connection to a micro-controller?
3. Can the App authenticate the calling device before accepting the call.
4. Can I use the built-in speech recognizer of nokia phones.

Any kind of suggestion or references will be appreciated. The project needs to be completed within 1 yr.

Yes, it possible to do speech recognition on device. AFAIK built-in speech recognizers are not available as public api.

2. current devices can not operate as USB host - however if your micro-controller can, that would help
3. what do you mean on authentication? If you mean getting the caller ID, yes, you can get it.

@wizard_hu: yes, its caller id related. The car need not be controlled by any caller and thus should accept the call automatically only if the authentic caller (from a particular number) calls.

And since the speech recognition API is not public, is it possible to use sphinx or htk open source speech recognition programs in symbian devices. if yes how should my approach be??

or else I have planned to record the voice commands (call recorder) and compare it with pre-defined audio files to process the commands.

The API for detecting and answering phone calls is CTelephony. If you search for it in the SDK Help (or in the on-line library, http://library.forum.nokia.com), besides its documentation, you will find some how-to-s (you can also check the Wiki - part of the Community "menu" in the top-right region of this page). Accessing the voice downstream is not part of the SDK, you can find related API-s in the plugin pack: http://wiki.forum.nokia.com/index.php/SDK_API_Plug-in
Depending on your use case, you may consider using DTMF tones instead of speech, then you could use the Goertzel algorithm for processing it (it is an FFT application, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Goertzel)

You can try porting this to Symbian and probably it should not have any problem. I had seen some demos which had custom recognizers. Or else if using GPRS is an option you can send the info to a server process the info there using sphinx or htk and replay back to the client with response.
