    Specifically, is it necessary that the end user install Qt separately?

    Yes, it is possible to target 5th edition phones with Qt (along with some 3rd edition ones, too). The user does not need to install Qt separately, that is done by the Nokia Qt Smart Installer - There is even a subforum here on Forum Nokia about it .
