    Hello everyone,

I would like to develop a new input method like T9, Letterwise, iTap, Suretype and so on. I want it to work on simple candybar phones. It's likely that I can make it on the most recent versions of Symbian, but I'm going to buy a cheap Nokia, maybe an old one. What is the oldest/simplest OS on which this is makeable? Will I be able to load my program on any mobiles using this OS?
I'm asking because it's not a typical external application. Perhaps it needs a deep access to the OS that only a few versions of Symbian or S-whatever can provide. Besides, I want to display a virtual keyboard on the screen when the user is typing.

By the way, do you know any serious Nokia-based projects such like this?

    thanks

    Cheers

It is called a FEP, Front-End Processor. http://www.forum.nokia.com/info/sw.n..._0_en.zip.html is the example, and you will need an S60 device. According to its documentation it is compatible with all older S60 releases (it mentions the 3650 for example, which is/was the second S60 device ever).
Otherwise the SDK-s come with an emulator, so you do not have to buy a device just for starting.

    Thanks wizard_hu_.
So it's not feasible on Series 40. Good to know, 'cause I had some S40 phones in mind.

S40 does not provide API-s for developing system components like FEP-s. On S40 you can experiment in your own applications only.
