exFAT in symbian^3 is it available?
exFAT in symbian^3 is it available?
From what perspective are you asking? Nokia has an exFAT implementation - I don't know if they ship it in their Symbian^3 devices or not. If you want source code or an implementation for another device then there's a licensing issue. Nokia probably can't distribute theirs without getting sued by Microsoft. Tuxera have a license to redistribute exFAT and if you pay them to do it they'll happily port to Symbian (I've spoken to their CEO about it).
Does that answer your question?
The Symbian^3 release that was made available from the Symbian Foundation did not contain support for exFAT. At this time no currently shipping Nokia Symbian^3 device contains support for exFAT.
Thank you NOKIA
we have cool phone with H264 support with mkv support and now with Nokia Big screen we can make HTphone(HTPC) from N8
BUT we can't play any useful content (bigger than 4GB) without exFAT
At least DLNA or samba will be cool
This is not cool :(
Firstly it's worth mentioning that I'm just here as an individual, trying to provide help and information where I can. I can understand your frustration in this case but please remember Nokia is a big company and I don't get to decide what features go into which products :-)
As the fileserver is a core system component, any new file system added to a Nokia Symbian^3 device would need to be signed with the TCB and AllFiles Platform Security capabilities. These capabilities are very tightly controlled as they are Device Manufacturer capabilities. Details of the process to apply for these is at http://wiki.forum.nokia.com/index.ph...Symbian_Signed) whether such a request would be successful in this instance I could not say.
Some general background on the whole signing process can be found at http://wiki.forum.nokia.com/index.ph...Symbian_Signed in case you are not familiar with it.
The obligatory wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ExFAT) has a good primer on exFAT but few technical details. You should pay particular attention to the section on licensing, along with http://www.microsoft.com/about/legal...ileSystem.aspx. exFAT is a proprietary file system developed by Microsoft and contains their intellectual property. Licenses for a variety of uses are available but all appear to require a fee. Detailed technical information is unlikely to be available without a license.
An early prototype of read-only support for exFAT on linux was posted on the linux kernel mailing list a while back (http://lkml.org/lkml/2009/1/29/404) which may be of interest.
I understand whole signing process
I did some application for symbian and CAPABILITES can be problem
But
It will be nice to know official statement from NOKIA, if we can expect exFAT support in Symbian^3 devices in future firmware updates.
Plz some response from NOKIA
With NOKIA big screen(http://betalabs.nokia.com/apps/nokia-big-screen) application + exFAT could be super cool combination
HTPC is out, welcome HTPhone :)
now I can play only <4GB files
From a developer perspective, the APIs currently available allow you to develop applications handling large files, regardless of what the maximum file size is for the file system in use. I don't see a need for any statement from Nokia in this regard.
If you are asking for a statement regarding Nokia's offering for end-users, that's not something to expect to see from Forum Nokia. ;)

Ok Symbian^3 is capable to handle large file as it add 64 bit support to RFs
But I don't see any 64bit FS currently available in Symbian^3
I expect this with release of symbian^3
But nothing.
I saw something about exFAT in symbian^3 sdk release note
http://www.forum.nokia.com/info/sw.n..._9_en.txt.html
New C++ APIs:
• exFAT File System APIs.
But I don't see any support of exFAT FS
As developer I would expect some statement if we will find exFAT in some phones or not.
