I'm building a S40 web app that links to videos to be downloaded and played (using mwl.loadURL).

The files download, but cannot be played, giving the following error:

    "file format not supported"

    The format is 3gp.

The videos could be played in 1.4.0 and earlier (Beta).
The files play when downloaded through Opera mini.

When viewing the file details, type is "unknown", but when downloaded via opera mini, type is listed as "3gp"

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated

    Hi and welcome to forum!

So did I understood correctly, that downloaded video file is broken in the Nokia Browser 1.5, but worked in older releases (like 1.0.2.26.6), right?
I'll try to reproduce what you are experiencing, and then report it to RnD.

Hi, Thanks for the quick reply

Yes that is correct. The video plays in 1.4.0.34.8 (downloaded from Ovi Store)

I was then forced to update to the most recent version (1.5.0.34.15) and the video can't play anymore.

    Thanks
    Gerhard

How big is the video, you are using for testing? I tried with small 576KB video and it was downloaded without errors.

    Steps:
Series 40 Web App with mwl.loadURL('http://myserver.test.com/Video.3gp');"
Clicking that link shows download dialog (Download video.3gp Yes/No)
    Download completes without errors
Clicking the Video.3gp in download list plays the video

Interesting, The videos vary between 1mb and 2mb in size.

I can reproduce this issue on all our S40 phones (5130,x2,c3-00,2700c)

As I say the videos play fine when downloaded on opera mini for instance

    thanks for your help

here are the url's to 2 videos I'm using for your testing purposes:

    http://www.zoopycdn.com/video/5970/1...ion=1322042028
    http://www.zoopycdn.com/video/5970/1...ion=1322042082

could the arguments passed cause an issue with the naming of the file or something?

Thank you so much for test videos

I doubt it is related to URL, since they both worked, for me, on Nokia X3-02 v6.00 and Nokia Browser 1.5.0.34.15 (Start browser, first tab, Tools -> About).

However with C3-00 (Nokia Browser 1.5.0.34.15) it took couple of tries to get 128x96 video working. I'm thinking, if this could be some sort of network problem, as another video worked at the first run.
Please try to reload the video couple of times and see if it starts to work.

Ok, since the most recent browser update (no version nr change), I can play the videos, but half the time I get the "File Format Not Supported" error.

If the failed download is due to slow download speeds (the phones only have edge), surely the browser should not say it downloaded the full filesize with a confirmation "tick" next to it? It should give an error message.

Also the progress bar of the video download runs all the way to the end as normal, but then still the video cannot be played. Its very confusing

Also I have not had one issue downloading the same videos on Opera mini at all. Not once out of probably 20 times.

That is indeed strange, one would expect to see a note if transfer fails.
I'll take this to RnD and see what they have to say. Could you tell me, in what environment you are testing in? (country, operator and network mode )

Thanks, please feel free to ask me to do some testing for you.

    Country: South Africa (Cape Town)
    Operator: Vodacom
Network Mode: Not sure what you mean, but it is a fully fledged 3G Network with speeds up to 21mbps. All our S40 phones are GPRS/EDGE though
    Phones: C3-00, X2-00, 5130 ExpressMusic, 2700 classic

    Thanks in advance
    Gerhard
