Rendering performance when drawing text

Hi,

I've been doing some rendering and at first I was a little disappointed with the render speed. That was until I comented out my drawstring lines and the whole app went about 70% faster.

So my questions are;

1. Is there a way of speeding up drawstring?
2. Is it worth ditching it and writing my own font render?

It worth writing your own.

Its faster.

Its will work exactly the same on all phones.

The font will be the same size on every phone.

You can plug your own fancy fonts into games and not have
to rely on the boring built in fonts.

Doing a proportional width font is quite a bit of work, but worth it in the long run.

Cheers for that, thats pretty much the conclusion I'd come to. The only thing that I would loose is the ability to change the font colour. I didn't notice any tint functions in the graphics section, is there something that I missed?

Just knocked up a quick font renderer, its about 8-10 times faster.

Shame I can't tint the colour, I guess I could do it as a 3D texture, but seems a bit of a waste of resources.

Yes, using a handmade font is common solution.

But on SE T6xx phones we had to use builtin fonts, they are painted faster there than our bitmapped.
