Unfamiliar with Textfield.NUMERIC

Hi! I'm newbie here. I need help in this. I want the user to key in numeric data only and I'm using Textfield.NUMERIC for the data validation. The problem is any data entries are also being accepted by the textfield without triggering any errors. I thought Textfield.NUMERIC is supposed to disallow other entries except numeric data. Any ideas? Please help....
