how to get MAX network speed over GPRS?

we are developing a network service,but we find that the GPRS speed on Nokia kjava platform is much slower than the pre-installed wap browser.
by fetching the same amout of data(eg, several pictures) . pre-installed wap browser is much faster(seems it uses one thread for each picture), but on kjava , using another thread does not improve the speed at all, at least it's what we get right now.
So, any ideas how to make the GPRS connection faster? I mean , the kjava gprs app should be at least as fast as the pre-installed wap browser, right?

thats probably wrong assumption, you wrote about C++ written application (native code/optimized memory relocation/better threads control) compared to J2me implementation,
Have you considered implementing optimized solution if you have control about that network service?
- instead of sending bunch of files merge them into single file
- on midlet side simply download single file and then create separate images or rgb arrays using Image class methods,
one file - one connection - one thread, its like reading tiled image resource from .jar in games,
or using socket connection (assuming that you have control about network service and network providers will allow sockets over gprs) and send images byte data via that connection,

thanks a lot , Peter, but what if the nature of the application is to get data from many sites? socket is an option, but would have to write an socket-http convertor, will that still be faster? in theory?

provide server-side (midlle layer) based solution for that - not on device,
take OperaMini as best-known example of such midlet: based on sockets if possible and all work except of "view" implementation is handled on server side,
