How to detect when the socket server is down???

HELP!!!!
I just done a J2ME Socket Application and success connect to my server. The problem is when I connected to Server via Socket connection and I stop to run the Socket Server, the application didnt show any error and just waiting there. Can I know have any code to detect whether the client side still connecting to server.

not sure (haven't wrote any persinstant socket app yet - but working on that): shouldn't be:

java.io.IOException

trhown on any method which uses connection (directly or using streams) in case it was closed?
