The number of terminals that one Gateway can handle depends on the application and specially used bearers. The crucial point is what the theoretical peak of the load in the application is, that is, how many requests the application makes per time unit. For example, one request takes four SMSs if the request and reply data are accommodated in one SMS-C. Typically, one SMS-C connection can transfer about 100 SMS/min. One Gateway can handle many SMS-C connections at the same time. With data calls, the data rate depends on the data transfer speed used, the call setup time, and ultimately on the number of modems the Gateway has for terminal communication. The number of terminals can range from a few up to over 100,000.
