Is there a way to interrogate the firmware?

I have unfortunately acquired a Cingular E62 which for all practical purposes is useless unless I want to open a Cingular account (which I refuse to do). So I figure I can at least use it for a S60 development tool.

I have read multiple threads on the issue of Cingular firmware being “crippled”. Is there some way to interrogate the firmware so I can be sure of what is there? Or is there some document somewhere that tells me exactly what is there?

As an alternative, I've seen a bunch of threads about flashing other firmware. Is there such a thing as factory software? Can someone direct me to the links and instructions, please? If not, recommendations and instructions for other firmware are greatly appreciated.
