Hi. I have never developed applications for mobile phones but want to know if what I am trying to embark on is hindered at present by current software/technology.

I want to be able to have a downloadable software app that works on as many phones as possible that can change the ringtone of the the phone at will.

I have heard that Java apps work on 90% of phones but after doing some investigation I believe Java doesn't allow access to such functionality.

Is there a way I can create a software app to change the ringtone?

    TIA
    Mark

Hi Mark and welcome to the DiBo

This is a Developers DiBo.Actually i dont get you correctly. What do you mean by change a ringtone of phone at will?

Do you mean that you want to assign different tones to different contacts or change the general ringtone in the active profile? This all is possible and if one wants he can build such applications for the devices. But i guess such features are already available.

Its not possible to change ringtones/switch profile from a Java app. Here is another discussion on changing the profile from a Symbian C++ app http://discussion.forum.nokia.com/fo...ingtone&page=2

What about if the phone isn't Symbian (like 85-90% worldwide aren't)?

    Any other ideas?

    TIA
    Mark

    Hello MarkBrownlee

Using Python for S60 and particularly the xprofiler module we can switch active profiles when needed. Also you can have different ringtones in different profiles and switch them by the xprofiler. Thus you can change the ringtone. But this feature is available only on the 3rd edition devices. Moreover in python there are no public libraries by which we can change the ringtone in the active profile.Surely hoping for it to come soon!

    Hope that helps
