Mount device on Unix/Linux?

Hi all,

First of all, I'm not sure if this is the right forum to ask my question, however, since I couldn't find any better I post it here.

So my question is short and simple: can I mount the filesystem of my S60 3rd device to a Linux/Unix machine? I'm basically concerned of security and unsure regarding whether Symbian left this door open.

Well, you could mount the memory card via USB mass storage class support. If you reverse engineered the PC Suite protocol you could write a Linux file system and mount the C: drive but your access is still controlled by the phone software and you wouldn't be able to see the PlatSec protected directories.

If you did some hardware hacking and managed to access the flash directly plus reverse engineer the way the files are stored on it then you could possibly access all of c: drive and even z: drive.

There isn't a simple hole in the security there though. There is nothing special about Unix/Linux in this respect (except that it would be easier to add support for a new file system type on Linux than on Windows).

Perhaps Nokia thinks there are legal issues and other risks (e.g., opening up the protocl might allow things that when done improperly, renders the phone unusable, especially in the hands of unsuspecting consumers that use a bad PC app written by someone else). Anyway, hard to say for sure, as Nokia has not issued any statements regarding this.

We're paying these guys by buying their stuff and they're not documenting what it does and how.

A wise man taught me a long time ago: Do not assume. I don't always follow the advise, even when I should.

In this case you, nor I, do not have enough facts at our disposal to determine the real reasons. Labeling it as "FUD" is your right, but there is no reason to think Nokia wants to deliberately instill any "fear, uncertainty and doubt" in anyone (users, developers or competitors) by not publishing the documentation. Or do you have some other definition of "FUD" than the traditional meaning?

Which phone manufacturers do document their PC software interaction protocols/interfaces at the level you wish them to?
