Video Streaming

Im streaming video, live, from a Nokia N93(S60 3rd Edition) to a laptop through WLAN.I've created a player for recording the video. Now, what do i do for streaming it live????

Can my player be directly used for streaming?

What are the QoS features tat can be applied to my software??

Wat encoding functions can i use??

If anyone can help me out with code/info, i'd be grateful...

So you created a MIDlet on the phone to record a stream, right? And now you want to send the stream from that MIDlet to some other place live, right?

Unfortunately in Java ME you do not have access to the recorded stream until the recording has been stopped. So you have to record in one thread and send the previously recorded piece in another (of course this causes some lags when the recording is stopped and restarted).

And if I understood your question incorrectly, please correct me...

You use whatever video format the phone allows. If MP4 is supported then great.

You send the video clips over HTTP or using a socket connection. RTSP is not supported for outward transfer in Java ME.

thanx a lot hartti...i've clarified a few of my doubts, but still i want to know more abt the basics..

I'm streaming video from a mobile to a laptop interface right?? Now, i how do i packetize the video? Do i use RTP for doing dat?


Also, when the first few packets are received in the computer, how will they automatically start playing. These are basic funda doubts i guess.. but can u or any1 clarify plz??/

You send the video clips over HTTP for example. You have to have an application on the server side which them compiles the incoming video clips to a longer video file and starts playing it.

You cannot use RTP (unless you of course implement that protocol yourself with a Socket connection on the mobile side)

yea, i'll have to develop an application that does RTP transmission. Do u have any tips as to how i should proceed..

I use Manager.createPlayer("capture://devcam0?encoding=video/mp4");

But the file is getting saved as a 3gp file. What should i do to save it in mp4 format??

Have you checked that the device supports mp4 video capture from Java ME?

yea, the N93 supports video streaming...

I want to stream this video using RTP/RTSP.. HOw do i do this. This is for my final year project and i do not want to use Real player or anything. This is my question:

How does one stream MPEG4 Video using RTP/RTSP??

Do i have to split up the video stream and audio stream? How do i do tat using j2me???????

Why would you need to do that?

You need to study the specification of MPEG4 to find out how to do that. I am not familiar of the format so closely.

Also remember that splitting the video and audio will take time on the client side, so you might end up falling more and more behind in sending the packets to the server.

My advise: Do not split the video and audio. Just send the video clips over the connection one after another like any other file, which you send over a (network) connection.
