[Moved] Help on developing Location Base Service Application

Hi all
I am new to nokia forum, and its my first post
I have selected to develop a location base service application for my final year project,but so far I have not been able to understand how it will work and how it will be demonstrated.
I only know that it uses JSR179 API, J2ME WTK, I also downloaded the example application TOUR GUIDE, and ran it on Nokia emulator, but still no idea
so plz can anyone help me that how should I start the application developement, and what tools are needed and how I will present the application.

and welcome to Forum Nokia's Discussion Board.

Two things seem to be clear: you want to develop an LBS type of application and you want to do this on Java ME. It seems also that you might not have mobile application development experience so my recommendation to you is to start by reading this Java ME FAQ, then use the Java forums on this board to solve your general development issues (tools, SDKs ...). Then drop by here for issues that are strictly related to LBS.

At that point it is expected that you know exactly what your application will do and thus if it can be demonstrate with the emulator, the phone or both.

Also, you can enable e-mailing in your user account settings so you don't have to expose your address in every message. However, the point of participating to a forum is that everyone learns from other's problems so there's really no need to move the discussions to the privacy of your e-mail.

thanks for your reply,I havde done wml programming and also .net compact programing using vb.net 2005.
but j2me is my first experience.
I have gathered all the infromation about the tools and SDKs used for LBS application development.
But till now I have just submitted the draft propsoal for my FYP,with the LBS application title.
but now I got one more title which is VNC(Virtual Network Computing) using J2ME.
I have found some .jad and .jar files of the VNC software.
So now I will discuss both title with my FYP supervisor and then will see which he/she allows me to pick.
but to keep my self on safe side.
do you have any idea about VNC using J2ME?

anyways, it seems to me u have to propose two possible projects to ur supervisor for ur final year ?
One is a possible LBS solution or a VNC solution ?
What I dont understand is what u need from us ?
As far as I understood u'd like us to formulate a possible LBS application or VNC application description ?

If that is the case I assume u might be better off on ur own, simply because being a final year student its expected from u that u are able to formulate an interesting project to propose to ur supervisor... U might want to do something with an already known concept like geocaching for a LBS app... Obviously that has already been done but I wouldnt expect people coming with great new ideas and just give them away on this forum, it is more obvious for these people with new ideas to keep them for themselves and develop them... Anyways to help u formulate a possible LBS app I'd google for LBS and see whats available and what running prohjects are.. maybe u can make something similar or something with just another type of real-world application (find easter eggs instead of geocaches???)...

On the other hand I might have interpreted ur question wrongly, if so please try to rephrase it...

@Itomuta : thats the way we Java peeps solve questions : we just ask a whole bunch of questions back now im interested in the response of c# developers (been one for 2 years )

thanks for a long reply, well I know I am in final year but I have no idea about J2ME, I am new to it, thats why I posted to this forum, nvm you want to know that what I want to do, well till now I am more intersted in VNC application, but havent found any stuff worth helping me about VNC on net, and about LBS I have found a lot of e-books but not dont know how to write the code and how to implement it(i.e. show the project in presenation, as how I will make the object move on device, other than using .xml file).I am learning J2ME plus the JSR172 API also, but it will take time to get expert on them, thats why I am asking help from this forum, so in future if I get stuck in it, I get help from here...

I got tutorial from IBM and NetBeans..but both got problem and I cant complete them..
do you have any experience of makin LBS code?

well making LBS apps only using emulators is quite difficult, possible but just not very simple...
the most easy way is to use a real mobile with a gps so that u can test straight away... the problem with using an emulator is that it obviously doesnt have a real gps receiver and u have to create a specific file that simulates a gps input for the jsr-179...

So what I understand from your last post is that after making LBS app using JSR 179, I can test it on phones which have GPS receiver like N95,N96....
I am in malaysia, will GPS work here, and once I have installed the app on my phone, do I have to subscribe to the GPS service or is their any other alternative to that.

gps stands for global positioning system... so it's global, as in it works all around the globe malaysia, tumbuktu or syberia wont change that... unless ur lost somewhere in outer space :P

u can use the emulator of the WTK for example by utilizing the external events options in its menu... In here u can use a script which simulates the inbuilt gps-receiver (like in a N95) by supplying gps-coordinates, which in turn can be used by ur application...

u dont have to subscribe to anything, the gps is an inbuilt completely independent receiver (not the best quality or sensibility but still it kinda works)...

Still, before starting to use the JSR179 u might want to inform urself a little more about gps basics (how does it work, history etc) : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gps


owh i nearly forgot, as u have read the JSR179 also supports external bluetooth devices, so if u have an older mobile with JSR179 (like a N91) instead of buying a new expensive N95 u might want to consider buying an external Bluetooth receiver vor 60 bucks or something...

I have checked the external event option of J2ME WTK, I have also told it to my supervisor, but he has no knowledge of LBS nor of J2ME, so after explaining him alot, still he says that he want me to show my application to him on real device, talking about applicaiton, till now I havent figured out what kind of application I can make which will use LBS, I did alot of search, but still blank....
I have N73..so as you say I can use xternal Bluetooth GPS device to support JSR179
Actually I am really stuck in my FYP title, LBS is now looking quite tought to me, but I dont have any other title for my FYP, can you help me in that, I have to make something realted to mobile technology, as my specialisim is in Mobile Computing, but beleive me, my whole class is blank as our uninversity dont have any profesional mobile filed experts.

and thats the nice thing about FYP : its a great opportunity to do something ur interested in and show ur creativity as in doing something innovative... so asking about what to propose as an LSB project isnt very fitting in this case...

if the N73 has the JSR179 then I guess thats the fastest way to implement a external gps device as a source...
As an idea of LSB, well the name says it all : Location Based Service... A service related to a location/multiple locations...
It may be something pretty easy like gettting the gps coords of like all pertrol distributors in ur neighboorhood, and according to ur position it will always point u to the nearest one...

If this al seems too "tough", well u could do a lot regarding mobile computing, maybe even something with Andriod for the future google mobile platform, or wait thill Apple's SDK comes out and do something for that... its all mobile computing...

Im not sure people will give u any application that u can show to ur supervisor, that would be the real-world work part of ur FYP, being that its imperative u do it urself...

Well thats how my school is..

If I make LBS application and then run it on N73, it will connect to GPS and will work.is it?
other than that I am thinking to make J2ME VNC client..wat u say about that..i think its easier then LBS..
I want an idea for mobile application, which doesnt need hardware support to run...
so if you hav any idea..
I have searched alot..but still no usefull result..M not asking for the whole code, jst an know how, that how it will work and some code sample to get idea..rest I can do myself..

My FYP is finalized almost, its not on LBS but on VNC client using J2ME, I am doing research on it, so you have any related material on this topic..
