Line break in list item

Hi all.
Does anybody know a way to insert a line break in a List item string? I mean, a way to have elements in a list, whose content can span several lines.
I need to know if there is a completely portable solution. I''ve used a "\n", but it only works on some devices (Nokia 6233, but not Nokia N70, nor Siemens S65 and HTC TyTN II, for example)
