how can I serve contents on mobile using flashlight

Hi guys, I've been working on flashlight to serve contents from a website, I've used XML for data transfer from server t mobile device but its very expansive. Expansive in terms of memory consumption and parsing of XML as well.

can some one help me to know the best way in getting data on device, there might be some better way than XML and I am not aware of that

Hi,

XML, as you have discovered, is quite expensive to use in Flash Lite. My own tests show that a 30kb of XML equates to 1mb of memory use.

While its easier to use XML for smaller tasks you should investigate using key value pairs instead.

Hi mark,

I tried it at first place but some issues made me not choose it as
by using load variables I had problem with '&' character, I could not escape it if it comes in the contents.
Second important thing is when i render it on my device(i am using text field on device) it run out of memory,
How can I save memory to view contents from an article on my device.

However, it'll be hard to find something less memory hungry than key/value pairs

yes, I’ve been to SWX, its good for data driven application but it doesn’t solve my problem. :-(
As I am intended to show contents from internet like an article is written there and I want to read it via my mobile device, but SWX also consumes resources heavily. I think we need some thing like Garbage Collector(as in j2me) but I am not able to do it with SWX also. resource managment is becoming an issue for me in flashlight.

Hi, Instead of xml, name value pair will reduce memory consumption.
That is why I have created a service for convert xml to name value pair.

So, this service will convert it to name value pair…
I m trying to break up that whole xml in small chunk of name value pair… but it will take 3-4 days more.

hi justin, as well as my experience on working with flashlight, i found it very good in terms of games. its my personal taught that flashlight has some limitations to use device
because it is not native as j2me hence problems in persistent storage leading issues with real life applications....i might not be right but i am using it only for games till yet.

well, I am not sure about accuracy of my suggestion with related to your question but a couple of weeks ago i came through a link that got my attension,
it was under construction at that time and just putting their intensions about working with some content serving method on mobile device.

yes jeff3r, I got demonstration copy from there and run it on my mobile device. they are serving whole wikipedia articles on device and my contents are much smaller in size than wikipedia . I checked proof of technology there, next coming release must be a good one, I'm looking forward for that.
