Nokia SIP VoIP client for N78?

I think nokia should be responsible by creating the duped version of N78 an N96.
Its a problem of their shortsightedness on this voip client issue that leaves its customer with a bitter after taste.

It seems that their policy change again for the N85 and N79 both running on FP2.

Why this double standards? They should rectify their mistakes for this group of customer of N78 and N96.

Please make this available as soon as possible in the next firmware update.

it's very boring to use and install an added software (fring) to make voip call..

it's so nice to just have the opportunity to select your contact and just take the option "make an internet call" like on all the others Nseries mobile phone.

ok here is another n78 owner very bored with this sip-voip issue.

guys we need to organize...

some petition to nokia or someone invent something cause we are losing money every time we call via sim card instead of 2-5cent€/min of betamax through univ, pubs, and bars or even mcdonald WIFI's!!!!

we need "internet telephone application" for symbian 60 3.2. and we need it now!!!

fring and others... is not a solution!

personally i can assure nokia that n78 will be my last nokia, and i'll make shure that anyone close to me never buy any nokia product....if you dont give us a real sip-voip app. remember i said "if you dont", but if you do give us a real sip-voip app for nokia n78, it's gonna be a whole new story...

and for other people...who google around. stop google. nokia n78 can't configure sip!!! hope i saved your time.

here is somewone from portugal that buyed this phone. i agree with the general opinions in this forum. nokia must release a firmware update to this phone that brings the voip client. fring is not a solution. bring the voip client is not a question of hardware issue, only software. and nokia... dont forget.. we are clients that paid for your product.

Is there still no solution for this n78? Recently my left speaker stopped working too which is notorious for this model. I thought this was a great phone but I'm starting to think different.

I have been finding info on this VOIP client by Nokia for a few days.

Coming from a Nokia user for many years from 6600 to n95, using internet call is part of the phones function. I agree with some of you out there, who said that some telco block or ban VOIP on mobile phones, so what? As a consumer, i will change telco, to another one who supports the function that i want.

I didnt read or join forum before i buy the latest N97, The Flagship Model for Nokia. Upgrading from N95, i assume this functions(VOIP) be made available. The sales info also stated that it supports VOIP. Purchased N97 on the 1st day of release.

Traded in my old N95 for the New N97. Transfered all data back into N97 and started using it. Wonderful, except for some learning of placement of menus, new functions, expected with newer, more advance phones. Started to setup the VOIP, key in the SIP profile, and next step is to setup the Internet Call Settings, which to my horror, cannot be found.

Good thing about being a long term Nokia user, you do not really need to refer to the User Guide, unless its a new function. This time, i needed the user guide to "teach me" how to setup the Internet Call, where HORROR again, it is not to be found. How can it be? I read the user guide again, where is mention "extended guide can be found online".

Went online and found the extended user guide, under page 77, SIP setting. ??? One small paragraph. (I have set up my SIP profile already) I want to know where is the Internet Call function? No info provided.

Through this forum, i found out that Nokia did not include the SIP client used to make internet call. ( i thought that new phones comes with added functions and Improved functions, never heard before removing or reduced functions).

My question is why did nokia not include this basic function??

Apple shove a call function into its multimedia portable device and call it iphone. Great with Web and media, poor at making calls.

Samsung and Sony added a call function into their camera, great for taking photos, not user friendly at making calls.

NOKIA, you almost "invented" the mobile call, taking huge market share, with your ease of call, user friendly phones. You are a Handphone conpany, specialising only in producing mobile phones that are Great at making calls. What happen to the basic calling functions??

Asking us to use 3rd party software is stupid, since you already have it. and 3rd party software is not intergrated as well as pressing the "green" call button, internet call.

In this forum, i read about how nokia wanted symbian to be "open source", so that like any good OS, applications can be written and added on.

You have written a great Nokia VOIP that works, make it available as a download (for those who need), especially for your Flagship, Top of the Range Models.

Wow the Flagship model also omitted this feature, what is Nokia thinking? I'm glad I read your post as I was considering this model too. I need to keep my old e61 for traveling solely for this feature. Very disappointed in Nokia for these steps, I used to be a firm Nokia supporter but I will be forced to look elsewhere and I know I won't be looking at the n97.

Thanks for the good feedback. I will forward your feedback to the N97 product manager - although this is a bit out of the scope of 3rd party application development. I will also check with him if future sw releases are planned to include the Nokia VoIP client and see what I am allowed to say .

At least fring works pretty nicely on my N97 PR 1.1. What else you would love fring to add to their S60 client in addition to integration to phone book & logs & calling experience?

FRING, Nimbuzz, etc. are completely useless for me . They FORCE you to first create an account and all traffic via, eg. the SIP protocol will have to pass through THEIR servers.

Which is useless if you are using a PBX like asterisk or a Fritz!box 7270, which only allows SIP connections through the LAN/WLAN, not from the internet.

It is utterly frustrating to see that my N96 CAN connect and register to my Fritz!Box, but there is entirely no program available that can USE the connection using a direct connection, either via the SIP layer in the N96, or a DIRECT connection through the LAN/WLAN......

I am yet another disappointed Nokia N78 customer.
Please provide a solution to the VOIP problem. We have been patiently waiting for things to resolve.

Having said that, I have installed apps like Fring, Skype, Nimbuzz but none of them can talk to the wifi network.

For instance, when I downloaded and successfully installed fring on my phone, it tries to connect to the available wi-fi networks (access points) in the area and then I get this error:

"Could not establish connection to the Fring network. Would you like to start automatic search?"

I say yes.

It tests all the wifi networks in area, but still cannot connect to any of them.

After it fails, it gives "fring cannot work without an internet connection. Would you like to return to access point selection?"

I say No.

Application exits. I see the same error when I run all of aforementioned 3rd party VOIP apps which N78 is supposed to be supporting already.

Eagerly awaiting some resourceful guidance. Thanks.
