Unisys owns licenses for LZW data compression, which is used by GIF. Any company doing commercial software, which creates GIF graphics, has to pay license fees to Unisys. Most companies are not willing to do so, thus GIF will slowly die.

For this reason for example PNG was created as a royalty free replacement. It's also better, in some ways.

Situation is not entirely clear, so maybe (guessing) Nokia is playing safe. Or it could be that after those patents expired, nobody just cared enough to add GIF support.

Anyway, the only advantage that GIF has over other already available options is easy creation of animation. Otherwise this 8bit (256 colors) graphics format doesn't really offer anything, which couldn't be done with JPEG or PNG.

Really shame that PNG didn't get any more successful,
