Help: AT+CPMS differences between 6210 and 6310

I have written software for the Nokia 6210 but seems to have problems running on the 6310. The problem is with the AT+CPMS command. With the 6210 it returns
+CPMS: "SM",1,15,"SM",1,15,"SM",1,15
the 6310 returns
+CPMS: "SM",0,15,"SM",0,15,"MT",1,165
when you yeply to a message but when you key in the telephone number manually (without +44) it returns
+CPMS: "SM",1,15,"SM",1,15,"MT",1,15
When SM is showing 0 and MT is showing 1 I just cannot get the message with AT+CMGR
Can anyone explain to me how I can get this message. I am running in PDU mode.

AT+CPMS="ME"
You have to change the reading memory to ME to enable reading from ME
memory.
