set/get Camera gain

Does anyone know how to get real time information about the digital shutter of the camera (the camera AGC, Automatic Gain Control). I need to know how much the digital shutter is opened because I'd like to realize a simple light-meter.
You know: when the ambient light is low, the AGC (Automatic Gain Control) of the camera is high, when the ambient light is high, the AGC is low.
I need a method to set/get the value of such gain.

In Java ME this is definitely not possible. Maybe with Symbian C++...
