Should the unsis work on any package, or are there some limitations on it?

I have tried it on 9 or so different themes, including some that I have generated myself using carbide.ui and it always comes up with an error saying :

"Can't read SIS file version: #####
Cound not process SIS file filename.sis"

Am I using unsis.exe incorrectly? Or when an sis package is made, is there a way to stop being able to unpack it at a later time?

could be that your unsis is for wrong version of the sis, as far as I jnow there is a big difference between 2nd & 3rd edition sis file formats.

If you are working on Symbian OS v9.x then you should rather use "DumpSIS" utility.

Check this page: DumpSIS - Installation file decompiler

I don't actually have Symbian installed, I simple installed the UnSIS package linked from here: http://wiki.forum.nokia.com/index.php/UnSIS

    D'OH, I should have read it properly shouldn't I!

Yes, you are right, looks like I should be using DumpSIS instead.

Thanks you for the assistance, even though it was a stupid mistake on my part.

I just tried using the perl script linked from here http://wiki.forum.nokia.com/index.php/DumpSIS, which is located on Source Forge, to unpack the SIS files and it came up with a warning that it is not a valid Symbian SIS file. Appears that one is still only for older versions.

In the end, I found this package: http://symbiandev.cdtools.net/ SISContents which does the job fine.
