HTTP connection failiure

Hi all...

Dunno if anyones come accross this yet... but it's driving me insane.

I have a midlett that makes an HTTP connection to a server

I also have 2 devices to test on.. An S60 (N95) and An S40 (6131 NFC)

The code iv'e developed works fine in the emulator for both, and when deployed to the N95 also works fine, but i cannot for the life of me get it to work on any of the 3 S40 devices i have available.

all i get is the following..

Requesting Please wait...
Building Soap message...
Configuring Post method...
Setting Post headers...
Opening Output stream...
Sending data...
Building String buffer...
Opening Input stream...

Approx 60 second wait here

java.io.IOException: Error in HTTP operation


Iv'e configured, and reconfigured each of the S40 phones... iv'e gutted all the access point infos, reprogrammed them all back in umpteen times over. Iv'e set up default access points, iv'e created and removed personal access points.. and all the while the handset has still been able to use the browser and bring up regular http pages.

If i deploy directly to the N95, i run, hit go and it all works fine.

Iv'e also just tried a web service using the WTK, and again same thing...

on the S40 platform device fails...

I'm completley out of ideas... anyone got any thougts on this?

Especially for step 3), I've managed to get this working as follows: in addition to access point, pressing "Add" and selecting "Web" from the list and setting it as default (unfortunately I'm not having a Series 40 device currently at hand to confirm this in detail, I'll try to get this sorted next week when back in office).

BTW: You said in an another thread as follows and I quote:

So you're testing this with qtel SIM, correct? If yes: Do you know if the operator is restricting something? (Have you contacted them on this issue?)

some questions:

* on S40 devices can you connect to network via device internet browser using the same IAP you've set as preferred for MIDlets?
* if you make GET requests from your MIDlets, do they correctly work?
* and, if the above work: which is the size of the sent/received data within your POST request?

r2j7 > We've checked the operator settings time and time again, all the sims we have are all qtel, and each one works fine in 100% of cases in the N95 (S60), as soon as said sim is put into any of the 6131 NFC devices, the web/wap browser works, but nothing else that uses vanila access points.

Iv'e duplicated the AP settings accross from my N95, from an AP that i know works, and iv'e also allowed the auto OTA settings pushed by Qtel (happens auto when sim is put in diff device) umpteen times.

jappit > on S40, browser works no problem at all, in every case where iv'e seen failiure in the midlet the browser has worked at the same time, iv'e tested bot get reqests and post requests, and still exactly the same. I even wrote just a simple stub using my connection code that connects, recives a single line of text and displays it, and still the same issues.

* using another operator SIM on your S40 devices, does the connection code work?
* is there any other MIDlet that can successfully connect to network on those S40 devices (using Qtel)?

Hi Jappit,

Unfortunately the only operator we have here is Qtel, so only Qtel sims available :-(

As for other apps, i get the same problems.

I'm convinced it's a handset configuration issue, but the configs set up on the S40 devices are identical to configs set up on the N95 which works without fail.

Iv'e tried a number of different midlets including the WidSets stuff, and no joy..

In fact widSets doesn't even give an error, it just sits there with a stary background....

Ok...

I think i'm part way to a solution...

It appears that i need to set a proxy address for gprs access, however i can only find proxy settings in a web access point, which does not show up as a general access point for midlet access.

Does anyone know how to set proxy details into a general access point on the 6131 NFC/S40 network configuration?

You can't set a proxy manually on a vanilla access point for S40. It can only use a proxy if a proxy address is provisioned over the air. You can try the Nokia Settings page for your operator (http://europe.nokia.com/A4144889) to ask for the access point to be provisioned remotely. I did a quick check and there seems to be Internet access point setttings available for Qtel.

Otherwise, you'll need a pure Internet access point (no proxy) in order for your midlet to connect to the network.

Hi Daniel,

Indeed there are settings for Qtel, but alas all it provisions is the freedom web settings, by this i mean it puts in the high level stuff, dedicated WEB/MMS and Streaming application access points, none of which show up as access points in the personal config settings, and thus are not selectable as a default AP for midlet connections.

:-(

I do however have the ability to send any kind of binary sms i want out to the test devices from my own test bed equiptment, any pointers on what i would send to the handset would be appreciated, if i can make the provisioning SMS myself, then i can control the settings exactly.

I managed to write a provisioning script, and send it to the device.

The net result... everything works a treat.

The moral of the story...

If you have an awkward service provider, and an S40 phone where your midlets won't connect, then take a look at ravidavi's thread, and the one on howard forums, it's quite suprising what you can do when your able to send your own provisioning scripts to the phone :-)

Especially if you wanna know the inner depths of a GSM mobile network and how it ticks...
