Mobile compliant sites give a better experience (.Mobi)

There are of course browsers such as Opera that format .com webpages to mobile format on the fly but you still have an awful lot of scrolling to do left and right and up and down to find what you want. You can of course create a mobile version of your site by adding an M. or Mobile. or WAP. or one of the many other options out there. But how do people find you then? They have to try out all these versions of your .com site first. And how does one know if the .com site even has a mobile compliant version available at all.

The answer is of course a MOBILE COMPLIANT extension that guarantees a great mobile experience on the small screen of cellphones.. Also when you are on the move you want relevant information fast without scrolling through unnessary pages and images of info. Well there is an answer and it is slowly gaining momemtum. It's an initiative backed by big players like Microsoft, Vodaphone, Nokia, Sony-Ericson, Hutchinson-Wampoa and many more.

It made it's debut in a quiet way in 2006 and is waiting in the wings to be discovered by the public at large. Already more then a million domains have been sold and every day more are being developed and are going live. Once there are enough live sites out there the ball will start rolling properly to bring it to peoples attention.

What I am talking about is .MOBI the internet extension created especially for the mobile web. The beauty of it is that you can create pages that can be viewed equally well on a PC as well as a Cellphone. And Mtld the company behind it will be controlling the sites to make sure they are mobile compliant.

Why the advertisement for .mobi? It has been around for years. Are you motives altruistic, or do you somehow represent .mobi and are just spamming?

I guess altruistic. Wow what a nice word. Had to google it to check it's meaning. Yeah Petrib...I only discovered .mobi a while back and thought it was pretty good so I wanted to share it as I have a Nokia phone that came with that one pre-installed .mobi address. See all the links I gave..all Nokia links. So who do you think I,m spamming for? Nokia or .Mobi.
Actually neither bud. One question to you..why the hostile attitude against .mobi?

While many companies have reserved .mobi addresses, I don't think it is a good idea to have yet another domain name extension that companies have to register and compete for, and which users have to remember.

What .mobi does could simply have been possible with "standardizing" use of "mobile.company.com" or "company.com/mobile". Same effect. Less hassle.

(And even with ".mobi", a more logical name would have been ".mobile".)

And in any case, the word isn't international either way, so it isn't obious for people not speaking English. And what if you have "company.com", "company.de" and "company.it", do you always force the country specific site users go to an English/International "company.mobi" site?

And what if you own "company.net", and someone else has "company.com". Who gets to use "company.mobi"? If people start learning to use ".mobi", and "company.net" grabbed "company.mobi", then "company.com" users will suffer. If the respective organizations used "mobile.company.net" or "company.net/mobile" and "mobile.company.com" and "company.com/mobile", nobody would loose out because they didn't manage to (or afford to) grab ".mobi".

A far better approach is that web site developers simply design their web sites to work with any size of display. Of course, that's hard, and means you have to avoid proprietary technolgies like Flash).

And if mobile content is separate, then they can still use the same mechanisms they still have to use even with .mobi (use HTTP-USER_AGENT or UAProf info).

If the main "PC-friendly" site has a clear "Go to mobile version of this site" and the mobile-friendly site has the corresponding link to the "full" site, then, again, no separate domain names are needed ("mobile.company.com" or "company.com/mobile" will still work).

So, IMO, .mobi is not really helping much at all, even if it might seem to, but just makes things unnecessarily difficult/complex.

Anyway, feel free to advocate .mobi if you wish, but I think it is a bad idea, and thought so already years ago when it was invented, and haven't seen any reasons to change my opinion yet.
